Her sculpted brows furrow again—always furrowing at me—and she drops her arms to her side. “Wh-what?”

I lift my hand and gesture her over with a flick, and after a hesitant moment and a little more frowning, she moves towards me.

In spite of how beautiful she looks in all the clothing I’ve supplied her, I think I prefer her most in her casual wear around the house. The soft pants that hug against her flared hips, the cropped shirts that expose just a hint of the skin at her tapered waist, and the unrestricted way she comports herself when she’s in them.

“Say that again,” I murmur as she comes to a stop beside my chair. “The last thing you said; repeat that.”

The rebellion in her green gaze sparks and she lifts her chin and stares down her pretty nose at me. “You, Mr. Tzelik, can be an absolute ass.”

I don’t even try to stop the way my lips lift at the corners as I reach my hand to thread my white fingers through the warm beige of hers. She stills at the motion, and when I tug her gently into my lap, she doesn’t resist, seeming almost as if she’s in too much shock to react.

“M-Mr. Tzelik?” she whispers, her eyes wide and round.

“No,” I murmur back. “If you’re going to yell my given name whenever you’re angry, then I’ll have the pleasure of hearing it always.”

She gasps in a little breath as if this request is more intimate than our current position. “Mr.—”

“Vahadr,” I insist, and her gaze slips down from mine.

“If this is some sort of…of strange attempt to derail me from my point…”

I shake my head and lift my fingers to her chin, tilting her gaze back to me. “I hear you,” I say simply, and it’s almost as if she no longer has the power to draw her gaze from mine.

There is more than one color in her irises. Green, earthy and warm, flecked with browns and golds that seem to glow when lit directly from the sun pouring through the windows. I trail my fingers up along her jaw, curling a few silky, dark strands of hair behind her ear.

“I think I should very much like to court you,” I say, and she doesn’t exactly agree to it.

But she doesn’t say no, either.

I feel my smile broaden, and my gaze dips once more to her slightly parted red lips.
