I swallow hard hearing my name come out of his mouth. It should excite me like it used to but hearing him say Dolan reminds me of Andrew and that is a complete turn off for me.Even though he was amazing in bed! Shut up, he cheated twice.
“Just the normal, school and work.”A failed marriage and pregnancy and law school attempt.
“You went for writing?” I see the hopefulness in his body language, and I want to lie to impress him, but maybe telling the truth will show him how unimpressive I am.
“I was in law school but dropped out to go here.” I look down in embarrassment.
“Nothing wrong with chasing after your dream Ally.”Oh, Niagara Falls, there you are.How can this man be so damn perfect and always make me feel good about everything in my life.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right. What about you? Anything new with you?”
“Same as you, school, and work. Well, I guess just work since my work is school. Your paper was great, have you thought about any ideas for your final?”It feels weird talking to him about coursework, feels like I’m in high school all over again.Do I tell him that it is already done because I already have a book finished?
“Not yet, I’m not sure what kind of book I would want to write.”
“You would crush any genre. I look forward to reading it at the end of class.”We are about finished with our food when Jackson comes back to ask about deserts. Before I can answer him, Dexter answers for the both of us.
“Just the check please.”
“Is it together or separate?”
“Separate”
“Together” I look at Dexter and give him a look that shows him I’m not okay with him paying for my food.
“It’s fine I can pay for my own food. The checks are separate please.” I give the look back at Dexter daring him to counter me again before Jackson walks away.
“Then desert is on me!” I smile at him, but I should really cut this short so I can head home. Classes are bright and early tomorrow and seeing him tomorrow will be even more awkward if we stay out all night together. Jackson handles the bills for us, and Dex walks me out.
“Well thanks for letting me crash your dinner plans.” I laugh at his outburst and place my hand on his shoulder. I feel a sudden shift in our energy, and I quickly remove my hand from his body.
“Sorry, I better start heading home.” I point in the direction of my apartment and stupidly reach my hand out to shake his. He smirks and nods his head in the direction I pointed to.
“This way? Lead the way, I’m not letting you walk home alone.”
“Really, it’s not that big of a deal. I think I can handle a few blocks home.”
“I know you can handle it, but I would feel better knowing you got home safe.” I try to swallow my independent demeanor and accept his offer. We reach the Chinese restaurant and I point to the windows above the brick.
“This is it, my grand ole apartment.” I say it with the utter most sarcastic tone.
“It is a beautiful building, maybe sometimes you could show me the inside and all the grandness of it.”I do not remember him being so forward with his talking back in the day. I wonder if he still has that girlfriend.what was her name again?
“Maybe, thank you for everything tonight. Keeping me company at dinner and walking me home. I really appreciate it!”
He grabs my hand and squeezes it a little while giving me his smile. The wind blows and I get a swarm of his scent wrapping around me. I can smell the apples and boy would I not mind bobbing for his sweet apple right now.Jesus, you need to get your ass upstairs and go to bed!
“Absolutely, I’m always making sure you’re okay.” I can’t help but pick his words apart, what does he mean he always makes sure I’m okay. Does he mean he wanted to make sure I was alright with walking? I decide to let it go and try to break our physical contact before I do something stupid like kiss him.
“I better get to bed; I have class tomorrow and my professor can be a real stickler for being on time.”
“I think I could talk some sense into him.” We both laugh together, and I make my way to my front door unlocking it with my keys.
