Julian continued my thought. “And that he must pay whatever damages the wolves decide are suitable for the atrocities he committed against them.”
Titus waved his hand. “Fine.”
Dysin stood. “Leverage. You wolves need leverage. Making Titus settle this with his checkbook is nice for us commoners, but it’s hardly a slap on the wrist for a man of his means. Find something that will make him think twice about repeating history.”
Sunny rose from her seat. “Me,” she said softly.
“Sunsiray.” Titus’s plea barely made it to my ears.
She waved him away. “If Titus ever goes back on his agreement with either witches or wolves. If he ever attempts to resurrect a ward between the cities or tries to take over Julian’s land, I offer myself, my immortal life, as restitution.”
Fuck. Sunny.
That was big. Real big.
But everything about her demeanor, the set of her shoulders, and the directness of her gaze, told me she not only meant her word, but that she trusted Titus to never do anything to jeopardize her.
I glanced at Julian, knowing to my bones that I could make the same promise. That the god-king next to me, who’d fought his way through the very ward we were about to obliterate, who’d taken stock of his character, of his actions, and learned to be the kind of man I needed, and more importantly, who was fucking awesome in the sack and didn’t want any mini Julians running around, would never make the same mistake he made again either.
I leaned into him, and his arm instinctively curled around me as easily as if he’d done it in every incarnation we’d had on this earth together.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
Gratitude, love, and affection washed over me. Over me because they weren’t my emotions but Julian’s.
He pressed a kiss to my head. “Do you want to get out of here?” he rumbled into my hair.
“Julian, we still have—” My words died on my tongue as I caught a glimpse of my mate’s blackening eyes. “OK, you guys good?” I asked the group, all of whom stared at me with varying degrees of confusion and appall. “Yeah? Good. Give us the Cliff’s Notes when everything’s all sorted,” I said around a giggle as Julian tugged me away from the table. “We’ve, uh, we’ve gotta go.”
And Julian blurred us back over the river to our city. Our compound. To our bed.
Fuck that mate’s suite. At least for now. Because I didn’t see myself ever wanting to be away—not even for a second—from the man who’d changed himself to be what I needed.
Who’d changed me, so I could be what this city needed.
What he needed.
Forever.
And always.
