Epilogue

Six Months Later

A pair of kisses was my favorite way to wake up in the morning, and today was no exception. It was the perfect way to drift into a new day.

Owen and Kingston were wavering on long-term housing, so they were still living the hotel life, and still sharing a room. But most nights all three of us ended up in the same place. Last night though, they showered me with kisses and apologies and told me they had things to take care of early.

I’d been bummed, but I trusted them. Completely. It was an amazing feeling.

I finally let my eyes flutter open, to them on either side of me. They were fully clothed compared to my flimsy T-shirt and panties. That hardly seemed fair. “I thought you were busy.”

“We are. Get dressed.” Kingston defied his own words by draping an arm over my stomach. “I’d say wear that, because yummy, but we’re going out.”

“Out where?” I wasn’t motivated to move anyway, pressed between two warm bodies, but even less so if a surprise was involved.

Owen stood and tugged my hand. “Vacation.”

I couldn’t go on vacation. “I have too much work.” There was planning to do. Schedules to rearrange—

“Taken care of.” Owen was probably as good as reading my mind. He brushed his lips over my fingertips. “You have to let this happen sometime.”

Kingston rolled to the side and stood, before taking my other hand. “Everything will be fine.”

In the past few months I’d hired another baker and a few more café employees. I’d taken test days off, and things could run on their own. Violet was more than competent. But the idea of walking away from my baby for more than a day terrified me.

They were right. Time to dive in. I forced myself from bed. “What do I need to pack?” I asked as dressed. It had taken time to get used to being in various stages of undress around them, but now it felt natural.

“Taken care of,” Owen repeated. “Sadie came by while you were working yesterday.

“Already taken care of,” Owen repeated. “Sadie came by while you were working yesterday.”

I pursed my lips. “You’re making me regret giving you keys.”

“No we’re not. You ready?” Kingston said. “I swear you won’t regret this. I wouldn’t do that to you. We wouldn’t.”

“All right.” I wasn’t really ready, but they were going to talk me into it eventually.

My world went black when a blindfold was fitted over my eyes. “Uh...”

I could navigate my house, including the up and down, on a pitch black night with my eyes closed, but I was still nervous letting them lead me downstairs. Kingston held my hand until I was seated in a vehicle. Owen’s Jeep based on the height, and the faint scent ofNew Carair freshener.

The three of us talking was a nice distraction as Owen drove, but it didn’t erase my anxiousness. Each time I reached for the blindfold, one of them grabbed my hand.

The car stopped, and the engine shut off.

“Now you can look.” Kingston pulled away the blindfold.

We were in a parking garage. From the signs outside the window, it was long-term airport parking.

“Okay...?” I wasn’t surprised by this bit, since Sadie had packed my bags, and it was too cold for camping. Besides, Owen didn’t like roughing it any more than I did.

“Kingston wanted to keep things a surprise until we landed. At our final destination,” Owen said. “But changing planes, taking you through customs, and everything else required, all without you figuring things out or anyone asking questions... Let’s just say even I couldn’t figure out that logic.”

“Customs?” Where were we going?

Kingston handed me a boarding pass. “Tokyo.”
