Page 74 of Asking For It

After all the angst, was I going to cave so easily? “I don’t wantthings.”

“Neither do we,” Kingston said. “But I don’t know what else to offer. You stopped talking to us. I don’t know how else to show you how much you matter, than to give you everything. And I would. Do you want the coffee shop?” He pulled a key ring out of his pocket, and started working one key free.

I covered his hand, biting back a whimper at the shock that raced through me. “I don’t want the coffee shop.”

“I want something,” Owen said. “I know I don’t have a right to ask, but I want it anyway.”

I didn’t want to guess what he’d say. “What?”

“Time. And you.”

Damn it.

“That’s two things,” Kingston said. “I thought you were the math guy.”

Was he seriously...? Of course he was. Humor to hide insecurity. The same way I used bravado to hide mine.

“I was so close to trusting you, but...” I sighed. “But I want to. Trust you. I miss you both, too, and I want us to work, but...” What?

Owen moved closer, gripping my fingers and running his thumb over my knuckles. “I’ll say it over and over, we both will, and we’ll keep proving this is about you. About how we feel about you, until you know it’s true.”

Kingston stood and gripped the back of my neck. The possession in his touch sparked through my entire body. His kiss stole my breath. My thoughts. Everything. The harder he pushed, crushing his mouth to mine, the further I fell into him.

He didn’t have to do anything but kiss me, to light my senses on fire and leave me whimpering for more.

He rested his forehead against mine. “I only kiss one other person like that.”

Right. They loved each other. I’d seen it with that first kiss. I heard it in the way they talked to and about each other. And they treated me the same way. “All right. I’ll give you time.”

“So, we’re free this afternoon,” Kingston murmured against my lips.

“You’re not free.” Every inch of my body screamedmore. “You’re opening a brand new store. You won’t prove anything by walking away from the event.”

“That’s not what this is,” Owen said. “We don’t usually attend our own Grand Openings. We’re only here to see you.”

Kingston tugged me gently toward the door. “As I was saying, we’ve got a room in the hotel next door, so we could be up here during construction. If you’d like to come over and—”

“Wash off the non-existent coffee?” I asked.

“I was going to sayfuck, but if we’re using euphemisms now...”

I smiled. Wow, that felt good. “You have a little more wooing to do”—but not much—“before I sayyesto sex. Butnoto the euphemisms.”

“What?” Kingston sounded shocked. “You don’t want my pulsating rod deep inside your love tunnel?”

I laughed.

“You’ll be lucky if she wants you within ten feet of her, when you talk like that.” Amusement marred Owen’s serious tone.

Kingston brushed his lips over mine. “That does make me really fucking lucky, it’s true.”

“You’re impossible.” So was this entire situation. But it felt right and real.Theyfelt right and real.
