Page 58 of Asking For It

Nervousness whispered at the edge of my mind. “Constable? Am I in trouble?” I forced a light laugh.

His chuckle sounded genuine. “Nothing like that. The zoning hearing on your building has been bumped up to Wednesday. Not that you’re going to fight it, but notifying you is a formality.”

“Why wouldn’t I fight it?” My blood was icing over in my veins.

Ramsey’s smile slipped. “Because you’re selling? Making thingsofficialwith Kingston?”

My gut flipped in on itself. I should have skipped lunch. “Did he tell you that?”

“Not in so many words, but he never stops talking about you. He did tell you I was pushing—Fuck. He didn’t tell you.”

I couldn’t speak. Where was my wit? My venom? Why wasn’t I biting back?

“Didn’t tell her what?” The fury in Violet’s question mirrored what I felt.

Thank the heavens for Violet.

Ramsey set the letter on the table. “I shouldn’t say anything else.”

“Finish the thought.” I found my voice, and forced it out through a raw throat. I was fucking scary when I was pissed off.

“Kingston filed the petition to change the zoning. When the request came in today to push the date up, I figured it was because the two of you are... He would have told you...Fuck.”

My world spun. I was going to be ill. Would projectile vomiting on Ramsey be more humiliating than what I’d been through in the last month? Were Kingston and Owen laughing about this right now?

“You’re such a raging fucking tool.” Violet’s voice grew in volume as she stepped toward Ramsey. “I always knew, but this... You fucking asshole. People like you are the reason the system—”

I settled a hand on her arm, and used the pause to find that same ice to force through all of me. I wouldn’t break. Not in front of him, and sure as hell not in front of Kingston and Owen when I confronted them. I picked up the notice from the table. “Consider me served. Thank you for letting me know. I’ll be there.”

“I really am sorry.” Ramsey sounded sincere.

Like I was ever buying that kind of bullshit again.

“If you were sorry, you’d take it back,” Violet said.

He fixed a glare on her. “It doesn’t work that way.”

“Why not? CanIcall in a favor? You sadistic fuckhole.” Violet was yelling now.

I tightened my grip on her arm. “It’s okay. Let him leave. I do have a favor though, Ramsey.”

“If I can,” he said.

“Don’t tell Kingston we talked?” I kept my tone sweetly submissive. “I don’t want to cause any ripples between us.”

Ramsey’s smile wasn’t so confident now. “Of course. I’d rather not step between that anyway.”

“Thank you.” I was calm now. At least on the surface. What raged underneath... I was saving that.
