“Help!” I scream the second the call connects.

“Odile?”

“Zie! You have to help. Get help.”

“Odile, what’s happened? Are you okay? Where are you?”

“No! I’m at Kaiden’s. We need help. We need—”

“I’m on my way. Stay on the line.”

I turn back to the body at my feet. He's so still. “Kaiden! Please. I can’t lose you, Kaiden. Come back. Please.”

“Odile? What’s happened?” Zie shouts down the line.

“It’s Kaiden! He’s not breathing, Zie.”

I can barely breathe myself.

“Is there blood?”

“So much blood. I don’t know what to do.”

“Okay, listen to me. Put me on speakerphone and place the phone on the floor.”

“D-done.”

“Can you still hear me okay?”

“Y-yes. Oh god please hurry.”

“I’m just round the corner. Did you call an ambulance?”

“No! I—”

“You did the right thing. Don’t call anyone. I’ll be there in a minute and I’ll fix everything.”

“Okay.”

“Is there something nearby you can use to stem the bleeding?”

Frantically, I look around the room. One of Kaiden’s hoodies is on the floor. I grab it.

“I’ve got a hoodie.”

“Perfect. Okay, I need you to press it against the wound and apply as much pressure as you can.”

“To which one?”

“There’s more than one wound?”

“So many, Zie!” I cry.

“Fuck. Just hold it against the worst one. Whichever looks to be bleeding the most. Sit on his goddamn chest if you have to. Is anyone else in the house?”

“N-no. It’s just us.”

“Listen, I’m almost there but if anyone else comes to the house I need you to grab your phone and hide, but don’t hang up, okay?”
