“You listen to music while you surf?” I ask, crinkling my nose up in disgust. That’s so…shocking. “Is the peace and tranquillity of the ocean too much for you?”

I’m almost teasing him, flirting you could say.

“Fuck no, I’m not a kook. It just gets me in the mood while I drive. Play it and see.”

“Okay. Do you want to put the passcode in?”

“Nah, I trust you. It’s 2902.”

“My birthday?” I blink.

“It’s your birthday? You were born in a leap year?”

“Yeah.”

“Huh. Small world.”

He doesn’t say anything else so I type in the code, open the music app and select the playlist. It connects automatically to the little buggy which I’m quickly realising is a little different to the others I’ve seen on the island, and ‘The Edge’ by Victoria begins to play.

“I love this song,” I say, settling back in my chair and closing my eyes.

“Me too. You must really trust me to close your eyes while I’m driving this thing.” Cove laughs and I smile without opening my eyes. I let the lyrics wash over me and with every minute that passes I leave the stresses of today behind. We listen to ‘Waves’ by Dean Lewis and a classic piece Cove tells me is called ‘Divenire’ while we drive.

“Hey, you missed the turning,” I point out as he sails past the road we were meant to take.

“I changed my mind. We’re going somewhere different. It’s a little inaccessible but I’ll help you down the rocks easily enough.”

“Oh. Okay. Where are we going?”

“I’m taking you to Iron-Bound Cove.”

“Cove’s dragging me off to an inaccessible cove? Should I be worried?” I laugh.

“Relax. I got you Mai-Tai.” He reaches over and takes my hand again. I don’t stop him, because I like it. His hand is warm and comforting, and I really like his touch. Our hands fit together nicely in a way that just feels…right.

We stay like that all the way to our destination. Cove doesn’t feel the need to fill the silence between us with mindless chatter, and I’m able to relax and focus on the music he’s sharing with me.

“What’s this song?” I ask as we pull over. Cove lets me listen to the last few bars of the song before pocketing his phone.

“It’s called ‘Mended Souls’ by a guy called Casey Hurt.”

“I really liked it. It was a good playlist.”

“Yeah?” He grins at me, seeming pleased that I like it. “You’ll have to share yours with me sometime.”

“Which one?”

“Any you like.”

“Okay.” I shrug easily like it’s no big deal, even though he’s just asked me to bare my soul to him. Yeah, no big deal, I can do that.

“Breathe, Mai-Tai. You don’t have to.” He squeezes my hand and then grabs our boards, using the shoulder straps on the bags to carry them this time.

“I can do that.” I reach out to take my own board but he skips out of reach.

“Hush. I got it.”

There’s no point in arguing with him, so I simply follow him to the cliff’s edge. The view is amazing, breathtaking.
