I choose to ignore Summer’s ‘start here’ and instead tell her, “I didn’t hate it.”

“Well that’s high praise indeed!” She laughs, dragging me inside by the hand, while I tug on the short matte silver sequinned dress she’s put me in.

When it becomes clear that no amount of tugging is going to make the dress magically grow another six inches, I give up and wrap the black leather jacket tighter around me.

Summer chuckles. “Come on. You grab a table and I’ll get the drinks.”

I do as she says, relieved that the bar isn’t too busy. I guess now school’s in session the bigger clubs are more popular. There’s quiet chatter which can just be heard over the classic rock music that’s pumping from the speakers. I like it. I choose a booth table in the back and slide in. From here I can see most of the space, and it feels safe to have my back to the wall. I lose myself in ‘Nothing Else Matters’ by Metallica while I wait for Summer.

I do appreciate her choosing this place; I know it’s not her scene at all. I guess if she wants to move on somewhere else after a few drinks, I owe it to her after this.

“Hey, here you go. I got you a G and T with no shit.” She grins at me as she pushes my drink across the wooden table towards me. I grin back at the memory from the last time I was here, enjoying a little inside joke.

My mind wanders to the handsome man who offered to buy me a drink. I was so uncomfortable at being approached by a stranger that I barely glanced his way. All I remember is his smart suit, shiny shoes and perfectly tied laces. I liked how polished and well put together he was. But for the life of me, I couldn’t tell you what he looked or sounded like. My heart was pounding too hard to take in details like that.

“So, erm, how are you?” I ask awkwardly. Summer may be my best – and only – friend in the world, but I still find small talk difficult.

“I’m really good, MT.” Summer beams at me. “I met someone.”

I’ve been around Summer long enough to know that this is excited girl-speak for ‘I really fancy this guy’. I’ve also learnt that the appropriate response is not to scrunch my nose up in disgust, but to reciprocate her excitement.

“Oh? Tell me more…” It’s all the prompting Summer usually needs to get the conversation rolling.

“Well, I say I met someone but I guess I should say I met several someones!”

“What does that mean?” I frown. Maybe she really does mean that she met some new people on her course or something and I’ve misread the situation. I’m confused. And it obviously shows on my face because Summer laughs.

“Honestly, MT, you should see your face! There’s these five guys…it all sounds so crazy saying it out loud, but here goes I guess…”

I manage to actually pay attention to the story Summer begins telling me because I can see how excited and happy she is. It’s crazy. She tells me about how these two guys on her course asked her out, and how they’re best friends and super competitive with one another, but that she fancied them both so she said yes to each of them.

I mean, it’s not the craziest thing that’s ever happened.

“So what happened on your dates? Or did you go on a double date?”

“Well, that’s just it. They weren’t kidding when they said they were fiercely competitive. They both wanted to take me out first, so I said we could go on a date all together – the three of us.”

“Was it weird?” I ask.

“Not as weird as when I turned up and there were five of them sitting at the table!”

“What?!” I’m not faking my shock. This sounds completely insane.

“Yeah, so it turns out they’d been bragging about me to their house mates so much that they all decided to come along and check me out.” She laughs. “We had a really good time and they’re all so hot, MT. Like, seriously, out of this world hot. I don’t know how there can be so many fit guys on this campus, you know?”

My mind immediately jumps to Bhodi and I scowl. I hate him. But Cove, the blond smiley surfing guy, and Reef, the dark haired beach party guy, are definitely hot. So’s your professor and that guy from the bar…my mind adds. My professor's a jerk. Tall, dark and handsome, sure. But his massive arseholeish personality makes him unattractive to me.

Liar.

“I guess.” I shrug then change the topic. “So have you seen them since?”

“Only, like, every day! Things are moving quickly but when you know, you know.”

“Know what?”

“When you meet the one, duh! Or should I say, five?”

“What do you mean?”
