“What do we do now?” Cove asks. There’s guilt in his eyes, along with a sadness, that gives me pause.

“Are you okay?”

“What? Yeah…it’s just…I spoke to that girl at the party last night. She’s in the files we left on your desk. I just feel like I should have walked her home or something.”

“How many girls did you get intel on last night?”

“I don’t know. Maybe thirty or so.”

“Exactly. You couldn’t exactly walk them all home, could you? I know you feel bad – I do too – but you were on a mission and that’s always going to be the most important thing.”

“What, so I should just let innocent people die because you need intel?” He spits angrily at me.

“If that’s what it takes, yes.”

“Hold on a minute,” Bhodi interrupts. “How do we know they didn’t get the right girl? I mean, they’re hunting the Star and someone’s dead, right? Maybe they got it…her…whatever.”

“They didn’t get the correct girl.” I sigh.

“How do you know?”

“Because the world didn’t end.”

Bhodi laughs like he thinks I’m joking, but when I don’t crack a smile, his face falls.

“You’re kidding?”

“Do I look like I’m kidding? If they had correctly killed and absorbed the power of the chosen one, armageddon would already be well under way, if not already over.”

“Is it that serious, what we’re doing?”

“Yes. How many times do I have to say that?” I’m so exasperated with him, even though it’s not his fault. The others all had a mild block placed on their memories when we were sent to this realm. It was the only way to ensure the safety and secrecy of our kingdom, but as the oldest and most senior guard, I’ve been left with full intel. “Right, we have to fix a plan to find and protect the Star. It has to be our only focus right now. If we get a tip or a lead, you chase it up no matter what you’re doing. Walk out of class, practice, a game…I don’t care. Be on the lookout for unexpected or unexplained traces of magic.”

“Will the Star be using their magic?” Cove asks.

“It’s possible. More likely they will be seeping magic, even if they know how to control it. The total solar eclipse is approaching, and this is the first time in history that it will coincide here on Earth with the same event happening in our world. So the Star’s power is going to be magnified as the heavenly bodies align within both of our kingdoms, and powers will start going haywire left, right and centre.”

“Is there any chance that she might not know?” Reef questions.

“That she’s the Star? It’s probable.”

“What about, like, if she doesn’t know about our world at all?” Bhodi chimes in.

“What? No. She must. That would be almost impossible.”

“Almost impossible isn’t definite though.” Bhodi loves pointing out the damn obvious. I’m sure he does it just to annoy me.

“Can you bring the witness in for questioning now? The rest of us will go through the files you guys gathered at the party.”

“Sure thing, boss.”

He lumbers his huge frame to his feet and leaves.

“Right, let’s start with the women who look similar to the victim,” I say, handing out the stack of files from the ‘blondes’ pile. “Do you have a picture of the victim? A recognisable one.”

“Sure,” Reef replies, locating the right folder and passing it to me.

“I’ll read through this and see if there’s any clues. The Shikari obviously chose this girl for a reason. I want to know why. You two, get to work.”
