“Oh, so it was an accident or something?”

“No, Mali! That’s what I was saying,” she huffs down the line, and I swear I can feel her exasperation with me. “A girl was murdered!”

“Oh.”

“Is that all you can say?” Summer snaps.

“Sorry. Did you know her or something?”

“No.” There’s a long pause. Silence crackles down the line, and although I can’t hear what Summer is thinking, I know she’s frustrated with me.

“I don’t really understand why you’re so upset then. Sorry. Is this a people thing?”

“No it’s not a people thing, Malia! This is a perfectly normal reaction to finding out that there’s been a murder on campus on our first day!”

“Technically if it happened last night—”

“Not the time, Malia!”

“Sorry.” I apologise to Summer a lot. Half the time I have no idea what I’m apologising for. “Do you, erm, feel unsafe or scared?”

“No, MT. I’m freaking out because the girl in the photo who died looks exactly like you.”
