Relief floods his face at my acceptance. I can’t explain the joy it brings me to see how happy I’ve made him, but it hurts too because I know I’ve caused Whit pain.
Yas at least seems to really want to shift with me and now he sort of knows my secret, he knows I’ll be able to shift into a polar bear like him.
“It’ll be amazing to have company that can keep up.” He hugs me and kisses my cheek. “I’ll take you out next week. Just call me and let me know when.”
“Actually, maybe you could all come for dinner too. Ade is due a sleepover at Jas’ and we have to talk about some things.”
“Of course, but there’s no rush or pressure. We’re not going anywhere,” Yas says kindly.
“Whit did.”
“Whit,” Yas sighs. “He has his own issues to work through. He’s not mad at you. Not really. He’ll come around. And he’ll be at that meal. Just tell us when.”
“Give me a few days. Please?”
“Of course.”
He pulls me into his arms and kisses my temple tenderly. I melt into his embrace, lapping up his comfort like a cat basks in the sun.
“Thank you for saving Ade,” I whisper, realizing I probably should have said something a lot sooner.
“No thanks necessary. I lo—I’d do anything for you. For the both of you.”
“Well I’m pretty sure you’d save anyone who was drowning, you’re such a nice guy.” I laugh.
“Yeah, I guess. But it was automatic with Ade. I didn’t even think. I just reacted like you would with your child.”
“You feel like Ade’s yours?” I ask carefully.
“I can feel Ade’s as much a part of this bond as you are. It’s just different, but no less important or strong.”
His words warm me, and I throw my arms around his neck, kissing him fiercely. If that isn’t a declaration of love, I don’t know what is. He wraps me in his strong arms and kisses me back with equal passion.
“Yuck!” Ade interrupts, and we break apart hastily. He gives me a cheeky grin but looks embarrassed to have kissed me so recklessly in front of Ade. “Can you two stop making babies now? I’m tired and want to go to bed.”
