“Let’s just take care of the ice first, okay?” I say, desperately needing to buy myself a minute to regain my composure. Yas moves over to check on Ade, who also has Quilo fussing around her so I use my powers to refreeze the ice. If Ade did this, we have serious problems. She’s going to be stronger than I anticipated, and I don’t know how I’m going to handle it alone.

Should I go back to Val-d’isère? Swallow my pride and beg my parents to take me back for Ade’s sake?

“I’ll help,” Whit huffs gruffly, stepping up beside me.

Wordlessly, together but with a great chasm between us, we use our powers to fix the rink. It takes a while, even with the two of us working on it, to turn all of the water back to ice.

“I’m so sorry. I’ll pay for any damage, or if you need to get people out to inspect the ice. I’ll cover it, I swear.”

“I don’t give a damn about the ice or your money,” Whit snaps at me when we’re finally done. “How the hell are you able to do that if you’re an air elemental shifter? The last time I checked freaking mermaids had shit to do with the air.”

I hang my head and refuse to meet his furious gaze.

“I’m sorry. I should have told you—”

“Damn right you should have! We told you everything—on our first date no less!—and you’ve been lying to us? Have you no respect for the bond at all?”

“No! I mean yes, I respect the bond. I feel terrible. I just—”

“And the other day at the studio, we were talking about your powers and you outright lied. You said you were only an air elemental. That’s not true is it?” I shake my head sadly.

“Why would you lie, Lumi?”

His anger has given way to hurt, and I can physically feel his pain and upset through the bond. I hate it. I hate that I’m responsible for it.

“Whit, I’m so sorry. I wanted to tell you, I did. I regretted it the moment I lied, but then I didn’t know how to correct myself.”

“Correct yourself? It wasn’t some damn accidental mistake, you lied to my face and you damn well knew you were doing it!”

“I know, I’m sorry! I just—”

“Are you going to explain why or are you just going to keep apologizing?”

“I’m sorry! I-I can explain…”

“I’m waiting.”

The hard stare he gives me makes me wilt. I can feel everyone staring at me, waiting to see what I say. Quil and Yas seem confused, and Ade is too curious for her own good.

“I can’t here, not with Ade…” I whisper.

“Then save it,” he snaps, pushing past me and storming off.

“Whit! Wait!” I cry.

“Go after him, Lumi.” Yas says calmly. “I’m going to get Ade some dry clothes and some dinner. She’s fine.”

I thank him and race after Whit but he vanishes.

“Where did he go?” I spin on the spot, searching for him, but it’s like he turned to air.

“Sorry, he must really want to be alone right now. He can just sort of disappear when he needs to,” Quilo tells me sympathetically.

He comes over to me and wraps me in his arms, giving me a warm hug which suddenly reminds me that I’m soaking wet and absolutely freezing. I begin to shiver.

“Come on, I have some spare clothes in my locker. Let’s get you both warm and dry.”
