“What is?”

“I keep thinking about my date last night.”

“That good?”

I pull a face.

“That bad?”

“Beyond awful. But that’s not what’s bothering me.”

“Well, what is it?”

“I never really thought of skating as being dangerous before. It was always a fun pastime but now I’m reluctant to take Ade.”

“Isn’t it the only thing she wants for her birthday?”

“Yeah.” I pull a very unhappy face. “How do I get out of it?”

“You can’t,” Jas laughs. “She’ll be fine. What’s the worst that can happen?”

“Clearly you’ve never seen that scene in ‘Blades of Glory’ where his skate decapitates her.”

“Really? We’re basing your irrational fear on a scratched leg, a bad date, and a movie where two skating dudes fly at the end?”

“Shut up.” I laugh, flicking my cappuccino foam at her. She joins in my laughter.

“Fine. Let’s just say I do take Ade to the rink. Do you see anything?”

“I see your date didn’t go well last night.”

“Oh. You could have warned me, saved me the trouble.”

“I see that you don’t have bags under your eyes from staying up all night and that you also don’t have that post coital glow that comes from sex on the first date. Powers have nothing to do with it.”

“Hard pass, thanks.” I turn green at the thought of sleeping with Rick, and she laughs again. It’s a lovely sound. Being around Jas has always been so easy. Her energy is light and contagious, in the best way.

“How are things now?” I ask, shifting the conversation back to her.

“Ugh. Don’t ask. The guys are getting more possessive than ever.”

“You can’t really blame them though, can you? It’s almost time for your...little holiday, right?”

“Don’t remind me. Two weeks in hell. I don’t know how I’ll survive what he has in store for me.”

I reach out and pat her hand sympathetically. A fly on the wall for this conversation might think that Jas was being overly dramatic, but I knew that she was soon due to go off and spend a fortnight in literal Hell with Lucifer. Apparently she really caught his eye, and they struck some kind of bargain to save Jasper’s life again but only if she gave him a fair chance to woo her.

Her guys are freaking out like crazy about the whole thing, but Jas has been pretty pragmatic about it all. She won’t tell me if she fancies Lucifer or not though. I can’t even imagine dealing with a five-way relationship, let alone factoring in the lord of the underworld on top.

“Wanna hear my new crazy idea for the studio?” I ask when she starts to look a little sad. It works; she perks back up and grins at me.

“Please.”

“Ice yoga.”

“Okaaaaaaay? Explain that one to me.”

“So, we take the yoga group out of the studio, down to the rink. I was thinking I could private hire it for an hour and we could do the session on the ice!”
