Chapter Fourteen

Baxter

I have some time to kill before my flight tomorrow and what better way to spend it than keeping an eye on my newest obsession?

She’s left on her own far too much. I don’t like it. Some people – myself included – prefer their own company to being around others. I know that whenever I used to have to play nice with the Knox family I always needed days alone afterward to recover from their company. But this girl? Raven? She seems to hate being alone. Whenever I watch her, which is to say all the fucking time, she seems agitated and restless. I’m pretty sure she’s running from something, but that she’s...haunted, too.

I mean, many would consider this isle of my grandfather’s a literal paradise, but she seems immune to both my charms and the charms of the island. She doesn’t take pleasure in being surrounded by the finest things money can buy, nor does she seem to appreciate or take enjoyment from the natural beauty that surrounds her.

She seems...numb.

Every time I lay eyes on her, she confounds me. There are so many mysteries to pick apart and uncover. How can so much pain be wrapped up in such pretty packaging? Though I guess the same could be said of me. Amelie is always telling me she’s allowed to appreciate the view that I offer and I know that despite my ‘psycho’ status at Knox Academy, there are many girls who are still interested. Or maybe it’s because of it. I guess I offer the full package: richer than god, famous family…a good-looking bad boy who isn’t afraid to carve you up while you’re sleeping and bathe in your blood. Who wouldn’t be interested?

Raven. Apparently.

Damn I need to find out more about her. I’m not afraid to use any and all connections I have to get intel here. The only thing I won’t do is offer up a favour in exchange for that information. Though, I am tempted. Dangerous. Reckless. My favours, my skill set, in the hands of others is not something I take lightly.

I watch like a perverted stalker in the bushes as Raven rises from her sun lounger and crosses towards the swimming pool. At the water’s edge her painted toenails curl around the lip of the pool and she stretches for a moment in the late afternoon sun. She has curves, but her golden tanned skin shows how athletic and toned she is. Strong. She looks like a fighter, like she could hold her own. My hand tingles and I glance down at the spot where I’m still wearing a bandage. Yeah, she doesn’t look like she can hold her own, I know she damn well can.

Fuck what I wouldn’t give to punish her for that little stunt with the knife! My dick stirs to life in my pants as I watch her execute a dive with grace. Perfect body and perfect form. She glides through the water like she was born there, emerging at the shallow end blinking water from her eyes and pushing her hair from her face into a waterfall cascading down her back. She’s closer to me now, though I’m still out of sight, and I can see the sun kissed freckles on her nose that were hidden under the makeup she wore at dinner. She looks even better without that gunk on her face, miles away from the socialite façade her grandmother dressed her in. I itch to know her story. I burn to know her secrets.

As I watch her climb from the pool, tears streaming down her face that are nothing to do with the water, I vow there and then that I will uncover every last secret this girl has.
