Were there clues there that I chose to ignore? I think about the flash of a tail I saw in the forest that I tried to chase that time, and wonder if it could have been Ash in his fennec form?

I’m startled out of my thoughts by Jaye’s phone ringing and her barking down the line and the poor victim on the other end. Probably her husband.

“What do you mean you can’t stop the bleeding?” Uh-oh, this doesn’t sound good. I suspect our coffee date—where neither of us actually drink coffee—is about to be cut short. “Yes, I’m on my way…to the ER you idiot! I swear to God.”

She hangs up and throws her phone into her bag, getting to her feet.

“Sorry, Jas, I have to go. Apparently I left the kids with an incompetent asshole, and I now have to take two of them to the ER. Fuck my life. One of these days, I’ll get an actual day to myself.”

“Call me when that happens, I’ll make mojitos.” I smile at her because it’s always this way when we do get together. With six kids at home and an even larger extended family, there’s always a drama unfolding.

“Text me later. Hopefully it’s a cheap accident this time.” I grin sympathetically at her and move round the table to give her a hug.

“I swear, his healthcare is the only reason I stick with the asshole,” she grumbles as she walks away.

“Aww, you love him really!” I shout to her departing back. She flips me the bird over her shoulder, and I chuckle. I finish the dregs of my drink which hasn’t even had time to go cold, such was our fleeting visit, put the sketchbook back in my bag, and head out into the sun, thinking that despite her grumbling, I would like to have a life like Jaye’s one day.
