I narrowed my gaze at the back of his head.

Patrick flicked his chin in my direction. “Umm, you might want to keep an eye on that one.”

Slowly, Kane turned.

“You knew,” I said.

“Barn, you got what you wanted. What’s the problem?”

“Don’t you Barn me, Kane Zegas.” I marched forward.

“I kinda feel like I should leave but this is way too interesting.” Patrick propped his feet up on the coffee table.

“All right,sweetheart.”

I charged at Kane, pretty sure I was going to strangle him.

“I wouldn’t call her that again,” Patrick said helpfully.

Kane glared at him as he caught me and pulled me into his lap. “You need to breathe,” he rasped in my ear.

“I am breathing,” I said harshly. “Right now, I’m breathing fire.”

“Why are you mad? Maybe the homeless people aren’t getting the building you wanted for them in that location, but they don’t have to move.” He tugged on the end of my scarf. “With all that money someone donated, you can build something for them somewhere else.”

I dug my fingers into his shoulders. “I hate it when you make sense.”

“Remember when I said shit is going to happen when it happens?” He kissed the tip of my nose. “Take the victories when they come. Don’t worry yourself with the why and the how.”

“Damn you,” I said between labored breaths. “You shouldn’t have gotten involved. I could handle it.”

“I never said I did.” He kissed the corner of my mouth. “And I know you can.”

“He’s not going to let this go.” My anger was quickly morphing into concern. What kind of retribution would Orem Foster take? Because he wasn’t going to write this off as bad luck and move on.

“He’ll let it go,” Kane said, far too confidently for my liking.

“What did you do, Kane?” I asked quietly.

He winked. “I’m just here for moral support. You know damn well I don’t get involved.”

“Oh, hesomeddled.” Patrick put his hands behind his head. “What’s baffling is why men give women what they want, but then they get mad about it because they didn’t do it themselves.”

I cut my eyes to him. “Should I get your wife on the phone so you can ask her?”

He shuddered. “No way. I spend most of my life in the doghouse. My back can’t take being permanently banned to the couch.”

“Thank you for taking the heat off me. I knew your idiocy would be useful someday,” Kane said.

I poked my finger into his chest. “The heat is still very much on you.”

“I’ll take you to the Hamptons and we’ll put that heat to good use,” he murmured.

“Marlow and the kids love the beach,” Patrick said. “Are we all going this weekend?”

“You are a pest,” Kane said.

“I guess that makes you the shit.” Patrick grinned. His phone rang, and he held it up. “Wait until I tell Marlow about our plans.” He moved to the far corner of the office.
