“I was jealous,” I blurted.

His brows knit. “Jealous?”

“Of you and Alma that weekend. You were passionate. I’ve never had that.”

“Barn, didn’t you notice I couldn’t take my eyes off you?”

My eyes bulged. “No. You were so . . . touchy feely with her.”

“But you and I talked.” He canted his head. “Well, argued a lot, but same difference.”

My heart hammered in my chest. “Don’t toy with me.”

“I wouldn’t dare.” Then he smirked. “Actually, I’ve thought of lots of ways I want to do just that, but I think you’ll be pleased with them.”

Heat rushed through me. “I’m not as beautiful as—”

“You are the most beautiful woman on the planet.”

I shoved at him again. “Stop it.”

He pulled me flush against him. “I don’t say things I don’t mean.”

“But you can’t forgive me. Where does that leave us?” I whispered, terrified of what the truth would be.

“Mom! Are you here?” Penelope’s panicked voice echoed through the apartment.

“In the kitchen,” Kane said, already headed toward her.

She appeared in the doorway, waving a piece of paper. “It’s from his mother’s attorney.”

Dread filled me when I noticed the envelope in her other hand. It was the one that had been delivered days ago.

“Let me read it,” Kane said, with none of the trepidation I felt.

“They’re suing me.” Penelope’s shoulders slumped. “For fifty million in damages.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-SIX

KANE

“I toldyouI’dcall you.”

Whitley blocked the entrance to his townhouse.

I shoved the letter into his chest. “I didn’t have time to wait.”

He glanced past me to Penelope and JoJo, then widened the door. “I never get a day off. And Marlow is going to give me so much hell over this.”

“You’ve had all day to tell her you invited us for dinner.”

“Daddy!” A little boy raced toward us. “Who’s at the door?”

Whitley picked up his son, Blake, who squealed in delight. “A mean man and some nice ladies.” He set him on his feet. “Go tell Mommy to order pizza.”

“Mommy! Mooommmyy! Pizzzzzaaaa!” He shouted as he ran ahead.

Marlow appeared with a baby girl in her arms. Her gaze narrowed on Patrick when she caught sight of us. “My wonderful husband is just full of surprises.” The vicious bite that used to be in every word she spoke was no longer there.
