I’ll sue her for stealing my parental rights. For stealing my daughter.

What good would it do?

It seemed as if Penelope had turned out all right. Better than all right . . . except for the murder aspect.

I leaned my forehead against a window.

I’d had my wits about me that entire Labor Day weekend. Unless I was around JoJo. Sure, I’d had plenty to drink, but not enough to black out.

I hadn’t knowingly slept with JoJo. Had she . . . I couldn’t think the possibility.

Why is the idea of her taking advantage of me out of the question? She had no problem hiding my daughter from me.

I took a long swallow of whiskey.

“Not before you keep your promise.”

Alma dragged me out the back door of her parents’ Hamptons home.

I needed to get back to the city. The long weekend hadn’t been what I expected, but I had some things I needed to sort out.

I couldn’t do that here.

Giving in to Alma was the easiest way to get what I wanted.

“JoJo! Mommy! Daddy! Grandma! Grandpa!” Her shout echoed through the sea air. “Come here.”

Lewis hustled over, a somewhat concerned expression on his face. “What is it, honey?”

She beamed, looking at everyone, except me.

What are you up to?

Her penchant for theatrics had lost its novelty. At first it had been exciting. Now it gave me heartburn.

Then that adoring gaze turned to me. I’d never had anyone look at me the way Alma did. Like I was a king. A god.

The most important person on the planet.

I wasn’t too ashamed to admit I liked it. Perhaps was a bit addicted to it if I were completely honest. That was probably one reason she and I had made it as long as we had.

She just kept smiling at me like I was the reason she breathed. I returned a smile of my own, though mine was more hesitant.

Not before you keep your promise.

What had I done?

Seeming to sense my trepidation, she grabbed my other hand.

“We’re getting married!”

What. The. Hell?

Married?

We’d never even mentioned marriage or a future. The most plans we’d ever made were this weekend with her family.

Back slaps and hugs and congratulations surrounded us.
