Sophia let out a shrill laugh, then slipped her hand underneath her skirt. She started playing with herself, right in front of me. This would have worked on me years ago, but not anymore.

“You have nothing on me and I have you wrapped around my little finger,” she cooed. “That woman you married is a nobody, and most of all, she can’t give you want you want,” she said, bringing her hand up and licking her fingers.

Anger rippled through me in waves. Staying calm was the hardest thing to do, and I failed at it. In a flash, I had her pinned against the wall again.

Giggling, she wrapped her hands around my neck and pulled me to her. I shrugged her off and unpeeled my fingers from my skin with one hand.

“You need to back off. I’m only going to say this once. I know many of your secrets, Sofia. Secrets that can destroy you,” I hissed.

“You’re bluffing. You would never do that to me. Your cock is hard because you remember how you liked fucking me with it. I am so wet for you. I’m fucking soaking. There has never been anyone like you, Sebastian,” she said, then lifted herself on tiptoe to kiss me. I let her have the barest taste, her tongue on my lips, then pulled violently away from her.

I stared at her sickening face.

“Get into that thick skull of yours that we are never going to be together. So you can get down on your knees to suck on my cock all you like because when you do, I am going to make you choke on it.”

CHAPTER26

Marinka

It wasthe day of the funeral and a lot of people came to pay their respects to my father—in greater numbers than I expected. Many of them, I’d never seen in my life. My mother must have invited half of Chicago. The beautiful wooden casket she had paid a fortune for sat in the centre of the church. She made sure everything was over-the-top and I hated it.

I wasn’t crying. I couldn’t do it anymore because of Lilly. Sebastian stood by me, looking a little anxious.

Apparently, my father wasn’t at all broke. He had money and it seemed lately, his business was thriving. He left most of it to me, and my mother wasn’t happy about it. She had never been good with managing finances—my dad always took care of these things. So, he’d left her an allowance, and the house, but the rest would come to me. In her eyes, what she had was not enough to maintain her lifestyle.

Sebastian would partner with me in running Dad’s business—we’d already spoken about it. There was no way I’d let someone else take over.

I could see my mother come crawling to me, trying to squeeze money out of me in the future. After the will, she’d already tried to tell me she never truly wanted to sell me to Sebastian, and she had no idea my father was in the mafia. Blatant lies.

The funeral took an eternity, and all I wanted was to say my goodbye in private. I had to tell Lilly her grandpa was now in heaven. She was still too young to understand why he wouldn’t play with her anymore.

I hadn’t yet told Sebastian about the man I’d seen at the clothing store. Life seemed to get in the way of us talking recently. We spent as much time as we could together, but Sebastian’s time was taken by his business—and also getting back at Sofia.

Meanwhile, I had my own thoughts about how to deal with Sofia. An idea popped into my head since the day I saw Logan. I needed to do this, to avenge my father’s death on my own.

“Are you all right?” Sebastian asked, lifting my hand to his lips and kissing my knuckles. His presence surrounded me with love, and I couldn’t believe how I got so lucky.

“I wish this whole thing was already over,” I sighed.

My mother was crying crocodile tears, decked in an oversized hat. A few of her so-called friends stood around her, comforting her.

“It will be over soon. Then we’re meeting Ed. He worked closely with your father and oversaw a few of his operations,” Sebastian reminded me.

When I was just about to ask him something, the service finally ended. My mother started to howl and I rolled my eyes.

She was a great actress, but the truth was that she hated my father. I had no idea why she even stayed with him in the first place. This had always been a mystery to me.

Sebastian led me toward my mother. I had to stand by her outside the church as we both accepted condolences from people. Then, we all drove to the cemetery in separate cars, where my father’s body was interred in the family vault. Of course, my mother had to get herself there in a limo. Only the best for her. Sadness was overridden by resentment.

My legs were aching now, and I longed to take off my heels. In the end, everyone left and it was just me and my mother.

“I will be in the car over there,” Sebastian said, then walked away.

It was time to have this talk with the woman who’d never cared enough about her family. I walked to the cemetery entrance, toward the parking lot, because I didn’t want to disrespect the dead. My mother’s presence tainted everything, especially a peaceful place like this.

“You need to let me take care of your father’s business. I already spoke to Mr. Richmond. He’s the best finance guy in the city. He gave me a few good ideas about possible investments,” she said, not bothering to beat about the bush. “I don’t understand why your father left everything to you. We were married, for crying out loud, and everything should belong to me.”

I willed myself to keep my temper in check. All my life, before I started living with Sebastian, I’d been my mother’s pushover. She dictated what I did, what I wore, where I went and who to be friends with. She tried to control my brother like that but he had a bit more backbone. He never listened to her and that was why they always clashed. Still, her cruel nature drove him to end his life.
