“Yes, my tummy is very hungry,” she admitted, patting her little stomach.

“What do you normally eat for breakfast?” Marinka asked.

“Coffee is fine and I will take one pancake with me,” I said, stealing one from her plate.

She smacked me with the tea towel. Lilly giggled and then started telling Marinka about her latest trip to the park while I drank my coffee. I could get used to this, just being with the two of them. The other world could wait for now.

Pedro came into the kitchen and poured himself some coffee.

“Watch them both. Penelope is coming later to clean. I told Marinka they could go for a walk or drive. If they do, don’t take them out of your sight,” I instructed him when he walked me to the door on my way out.

I wished I could stay longer with them, but Milo was already texting me and I had a few meetings lined up that couldn’t wait. Things were a little tense after the fire and many people were nervous about their jobs. They all needed reassurance that the club would reopen soon and their livelihoods weren’t at stake. On top of that, the police wanted to talk to me and today was the day.

“Sure, boss,” he said.

I left after going back to say one last goodbye to my ladies.

By the time twelve o’clock rolled in, I was exhausted and pissed off. The meeting with one of my suppliers didn’t go well, especially when they found out about the fires. I drove to one of my other clubs that hadn’t been targeted, and checked on things. Lately, the Italians had been hanging out there in the evenings, causing trouble, picking on women, and starting fights. It had to be Gino’s doing. He’d already hurt Marinka, now he was hitting my pocket. I wouldn’t let him hurt my family again.

Starving, I headed to a new Greek restaurant in the neighborhood and managed to secure a table by the window. If the food was good, I’d bring Marinka here on a date. She did need to put on a bit of weight, so I had to make sure she got enough sustenance every day.

“Can I get you anything to drink?” the waitress asked.

“We will have champagne, dear. The best you have. Money’s no object,” came a smooth feminine voice.

A beautiful, dark-haired woman made herself comfortable in the chair opposite mine, her curves encased in an elegant, figure-hugging red dress and half her face covered by over-the-top designer sunglasses. Her strong perfume irritated my nostrils. How did Sofia find me here? Had she been following me? To be honest, I thought I’d buy myself a bit of time before having to face her. I wasn’t ready yet.

“What are you doing here, Sofia?” I asked, my voice harsher than it should be. I looked behind her and spotted two of her bodyguards standing outside. There was probably one in the car, too. She had always been careful and besides, she liked to flaunt her power.

She smiled and took off her sunglasses. She reminded me a lot of Russina in character—cold and calculating, just like her. Sofia knew who had the best product and who would advance her position in the game of chess that was our world. She was always ahead of everyone.

Although a little younger than me, she had proven to me and many others that she was dangerous.

“Relax, Sebastian. I was in the neighborhood and saw you pass by in your car, so I decided to join you,” she said sweetly, licking her red painted lips.

I remembered those lips around my cock. She’d be way too rough with me and when I’d had enough, I told her to get lost. That had been a mistake on my part. Everyone in this damn city knew that Sofia didn’t fucking let go of things.

“What do you want? We have nothing to talk about.” Before I could say anything else, the waitress brought the fancy champagne. She opened the bottle of Moëtand poured some in the pair of flutes she’d brought, then set it in the ice bucket by the table.

Sofia had no doubt been behind Marcus’ death, yet the family were aware of what she could bring to the table. On top of that, her father had a lot of influence in our circle. He had a lot of people in his pocket and called many shots. His only weak spot was his daughter. He’d put his face on a bed of hot coals if it meant making her happy.

I didn’t like this one bit.

“Drink. You’re so tense. Is it because your little wife woke up from her coma? I’m surprised you’re working right now. I thought you would be at home with her,” she said, and my heart threw itself over my ribcage. How the fuck did she know? My blood started drumming in my ears.

“I have no idea what are you talking about. My wife is dead,” I said, playing dumb. There was no fucking way I was going to admit to anything.

She drank some champagne and perused the menu. Suddenly, I lost my appetite.

“Sebastian, I’m hurt. We have known each other for a long time and since Marcus’ death, I’ve learnt a few things here and there. There isn’t anything you could hide from me anymore,” she said, lifting her gaze to mine and moving her leg to brush it against mine. “Russina was killed and then you bought this girl from Vlad. It was all his fault, so you trained her to act like your ex-wife. I must say this was very clever ruse on your part. No one have suspected a thing, and to tell you the truth, I wasn’t expecting it either—so congrats. You have outplayed us all.”

CHAPTER12

Marinka

Lilly was napping,my physiotherapy session was done and Dr. Seamon was gone, so I had some quiet time. This gave me a bit of time to find out more about Sebastian. I wasn’t too happy with the fact that he left me alone again today, but he had to take care of his business. I wasn’t planning to be a stay-at-home mum forever. I wanted to go back to collage or help him run his clubs. I needed to feel useful, even though Sebastian probably didn’t realize how much of an asset I could be to him.

Life was fleeting, and I had to make the most of it. I just couldn’t fathom that this was it—staying at home, doing nothing all day. Sebastian must have forced me to quit college when he accepted me as payment from my parents. Before I ended up in a coma, I must have been deathly bored because I didn’t think playing Russina would have taken too much of my time.
