His smirk made him even sexier. She agreed they were more like brother and sister, but that didn’t make her blind to Reed’s charisma.

“I’ve already given it a thought, actually,” she said.

He slung an arm over her shoulder and directed them over to the shore. She couldn’t believe she’d let him. But then again, there was something about this big ape that somehow made her feel at ease. His fun-loving character had a lot to do with it.

“You have?” he asked.

“Yeah. I predict that between you and Raven, sparks will definitely fly, but since you both have strong personalities, I think it would ultimately clash. My friend Liv isn’t open for anything since she’s hung up on this guy she’s been seeing on and off for nearly three years now.”

“Hmm. And your other friend?”

“Hailey?”

“Yeah?”

“She’s like the female version of you; always joking around and also, eh, very… open?”

Reed sat down where the waves rolled up to the shore. She watched him bury his feet in the wet sand, leaning back on his elbows as he peered out over the ocean in front of them.

“What do you mean? Open how?” he finally asked.

Adela hated herself for even bringing it up. Nothing good would come from telling Reed any of this. She sat down next to him and sighed.

“I shouldn’t have said that. Forget I said anything.”

“Ah, come on. You can’t leave me hanging like this! Is she into open relationships or something like that?”

Adela purposely held her gaze strictly on the horizon; unable to meet his smirk since she didn’t want to give away. He was right on the money. Why did she even bring this stuff up? Even though Reed wasn’t her brother—obviously—it felt like she was talking to a friend.

“She’s very outspoken about… stuff…”

He ruffled her hair like she imagined a big brother would. “Than she’s very different from you.”

She sighed. “I know.”

“I’ve told Jack this morning that he shouldn’t let you get too attached.”

She balled her fists next to her hips. “Wow. That’s nice of you.”

“Shit. That doesn’t sound good, eh?”

She slapped sand from her knee while shaking her head. “No, it doesn’t.”

“Okay, so hear me out. You probably heard the stories about Jack being a player when we were sitting around the fire last night, right?”

She really didn’t like where he was going with this, so she simply pulled a brow before crossing her arms in front of her chest.

“Your vibe screams ‘virgin’ and I would hate to see him hurt you since Jack’s not a relationship-kind-of-guy.”

Adela let herself fall back into the sand and stared up at the cirrus clouds against the blue sky. Reed butting in was just what she needed… She was so easy to read. And Reed just worded everything she already had figured out for herself.

Reed rested his broad back against the sand next to her.

“Sorry. I know I have a big mouth. But in my defense, I only butt in with the people closest to me like my bro’s.”

She got it all out in the open since the cat obviously was already out of the bag.

“You’re right, though. I am a virgin. And Jack is obviously some kind of hotshot—not just work wise…”
