Trying not to panic, I ran to the toilet and flushed it. “Just changing my tampon again,” I called cheerfully through the door.

After Coach released a disgusted sigh, he retreated, his heavy footfalls sounding farther and farther away.

“Great, now he’s going to think I just bled all over his bathroom,” I muttered, laughing at the absurdity of it all.

Jack’s silky laugh filled my ear, blanketing me with its warmth. “Better than him thinking you took a dump. Or worse, that you found out about his little doping habit.”

True that.

I unlocked the door, beelining to the staircase.

My hand held onto the banister railing tightly as I descended, nervous to find Coach, but needing to make a quick exit.

“There you are.” His lips pulled up slightly seeing me again. “Your treats are a huge hit.” He looked down at my breasts briefly before turning away, waving me into the kitchen to follow him.

“Did he just look at your chest when he said that?” Jack guessed.

How the hell did he know that?I wanted to know, but kept my lips sealed.

Sure enough, as soon as I walked into the kitchen, I saw a dozen or more teenage boys devouring my cupcakes. It looked as if they had found the extra box of cookies I had made as well, the now open box only holding a few crumbs.

The fact that they liked my baking made me flush with happiness.

“Well, I guess my job here is done.” I turned to Coach, holding out my hand to shake his. Rather than accepting it he pulled me in for an uncomfortably long and very much unwelcome hug. I pushed out of his embrace, with a tight smile on my face.

“Thanks for the tour. I need to get going.” I turned on my heel, walking as quickly as I could to the door, opening it with a little extra uumpf than was necessary.

But I felt the coach close behind as I made it outside, the warm sun and fresh air giving me a sense of security I didn’t know I needed.

“Why don’t you give me your number? I can show you around town. A lot has changed since high school.” I looked over my shoulder to find him with his hand held out as if expecting me to pull out my phone.

Fuck.

There was no way I’d give this creep my phone number. Doping scandal or no. I continued my hustle to the car.

“I just got out of a relationship, and I don’t think it would be good to get into a relationship with anyone right now. I really need to work on myself,” I rambled quickly while my finding my keys, trying not to stumble on the uneven driveway.

Undeterred, he asked again. “It could just be a friendly outing. Besides, sometimes the best way to get over someone is to—”

I clicked the unlock button and slammed my car door before I could let him finish his sentence.

I glanced at him through the driver’s side window. “If you change your mind, come find me,” he said with a wave. He waited for me to pull out of the drive, waving at my car as I left.

Ugh, I shivered.

“I wasn’t kidding about that shower.”

“You can shower at my place.”

I jumped in my seat, glad for my seatbelt holding me in place.

“Jesus, Jack. Again, you gotta keep breathing so that I know you are still on the line. You’re freaking me out.” I drove carefully back toward Jack’s house.

“Well, we still have our date tonight. I sure hope you haven’t forgotten.”

How could I forget?

“I haven’t forgotten anything.” I promised.
