My stomach dropped. It needed to stop doing that. I’d had too many major life changes recently to be able to handle much more.

“I’ll be right over. Stay where you are and for god’s sakes, call a plumber.”

A familiar hand found the small of my back.

“What happened?” Jack asked, eyebrows pinched together.

“A pipe burst in Savannah’s home and the place is flooded. I’ve got to get over there right now.” I searched the parking lot for my vehicle before remembering that I didn’t have it with me, thanks to Jack’s impromptu kidnapping.

“I’ll drive.” Jack directed me into the car, and we took off immediately. With a flip of a switch the police siren sounded, and Jack maneuvered us quickly through Haver’s Creek. I watched him, mesmerized as he effortlessly wove through traffic, through busy intersections, never once breaking a sweat despite his high speed. I had absolute confidence in his driving abilities and felt surprisingly safe as he navigated a number of roadblocks.

He got us to my sister’s house in record time. I found her standing outside in her winter coat, bouncing on the balls of her feet. She ran over to me as soon as she spotted the car.

Savannah wrapped her arms around me. “I don’t know what to do.”

“We need to get to the shut-off valve,” Jack said urgently. “Do you know where it is Sav?” he asked as he made his way around the house. Savannah backed away from me, running her hands through her hair.

“I don’t know.” She held up her hands in defeat. Jack continued to search as I saw water streaming out the front door.

Damn, that was going to cost a lot to repair. I hoped insurance would cover it all.

“Did you call the plumber?” I asked.

Savannah nodded. “Yep, he’s on his way.”

A few minutes later a large gray van pulled up behind the police car, just as Jack emerged from behind the house.

“I found the valve.” He wiped his dirty hands on a towel he procured from somewhere.

I couldn’t help but stare at him as he approached, his sleeves rolled up revealing his strong forearms.

Full on arm porn.

Fortunately, his attention was on my sister.

“You found it?” I heard Savannah ask.

Jack bobbed his head. “I turned it off, but there is still going to be a lot of damage Sav, it looks like there is an inch of water covering the living room and kitchen.”

“Excuse me,” a dry, smoker’s voice called from behind us. The plumber.

Savannah went and talked to him with Jack serving as back up. I mentally ran through all the things that might be destroyed by the man-made lake in Savannah’s house.

I cringed to think about what we’d recover.

“Ma’am you can’t stay in that house for a least a couple of weeks,” the plumber began to say, stealing my attention.

I walked over to the group, hands in my pockets as I tried to keep warm against the setting sun.

“What did you say?”

The middle-aged man crossed his arms. “I need to check the damage,” he said while loudly chewing a piece of gum. “You ain’t going back into that house right away.” He shook his head.

“Why not?” I needed to know.

“It ain’t safe. Who knows if there are any wires sitting in that water? Could get yourself electrocuted.” He raised his bushy eyebrows. “Then you need someone to clean up this mess, rip out the flooring. You know, make sure you don’t have any mold.”
