Chapter 9

Her words were playing in my head, over and over again, as I waited outside her university to pick her up.

“You’re a good guy. Thank you.”

The problem was...I wasn’t. I was a piece of shit. I was using her to get to her brother. But then...was I really using her? She wanted this just as much as I did; she was basically begging me to play with fire. It was like she’d cast a magic spell over me that had robbed me of my free will. That night at the clinic, I was willing to throw everything out the window just to be with her. Deep inside her, to be precise. It would take every bit of strength to keep my hands off her, but I had sworn to myself I wouldn’t make a move again, and when I really made up my mind, nothing could change it.

The sleepy campus’s university bell sounded, and students began herding out of different buildings like cattle to a pasture. Some of them gathered in front of entrance doors and chatted, others strode off with books in their hands, that stressful look of long-overdue papers plastered all over their faces.

I was about to text Mila when I noticed a small group of young women exiting one of the larger buildings close to my truck. It took me less than a second to scout her. That smile as she talked to her classmates, I could have picked her out from a million miles away. She was wearing slim jeans and a tank top, her hair put up into a bun, those sexy teacher glasses pushed back on her nose.

The group of women suddenly looked my way, so did she. Even from a distance, I could read the wordwowon one of her classmate’s lips. In response, Mila gently slapped her friend’s arm. A few more giggles, another round of rapidly blinking eyelashes staring my way, then Mila hugged her friends goodbye and walked over.

“Dear God,” she said, rolling her eyes as she climbed into the front of my truck. “You are leaving quite an impression, aren’t you?”

I let out a sarcastic laugh and pulled out onto the road. “A middle-aged animal control officer living with an old cat, growing tomatoes on the side. Every woman’s dream.”

She shrugged. “You’d be surprised.”

“You look good,” I said innocently, although I did glance at her perfect, large breasts real quick.

She adjusted her glasses.

“I mean, you look happy,” I recovered as best I could.

“Why wouldn’t I? I get to save animals for a week with my favorite cop in town.”

My foot almost slammed the brakes.

“Cop?” I coughed.

“Aren’t you the law of the animals?” she joked.I took a big, steadying breath.

“I...I guess you could say that.”

She studied my truck’s radio and picked up the little handheld speaker.

“So, where are we heading?”

I opened my middle console and handed her a pair of working gloves.

“I just got a call about a raccoon family stuck on a tree in some lady’s backyard. Peggy Meyer.”

She smiled and tried on the thick leather gloves. “This is so exciting.”

Her honest enjoyment was the cutest thing I’d ever seen in my life.

“I don’t want to jinx the mission, but those raccoon mothers are quite a force to reckon with. They’d die for their little ones.”

“Good,” she said.

“Good?”

“That’s how it should be.”

Glancing at her from the corner of my eye, I noticed that Mila was staring at me. Was she checking me out? Clearing my throat, I focused back on the road and tried to ignore the fact that she was here with me, alone—her delicious smell had already filled my truck again.

It didn’t take long to arrive at the Meyer house. It was an older single-family home in the outer skirts of Roxbury. I stepped out of the truck and grabbed one of the larger cages from the back. Mila was standing in front of the home waiting for me. The air was filled with frantic dog barks.
