“Thanks. I wanted Lucian to tell him.”

“I think that’ll be perfect.”

Lucian groaned in the bed and his body stirred.

“It looks like this release of negativity has done some good things,” Sarah said.

I put a hand to his forehead. “He feels so much cooler.”

“Stay with him.” Sarah stood. “And I’ll let Dymitri know to change up the menu.”

“Thanks.” I got up to hug her. “I love you.”

“Love you too.” She left me alone with Lucian.

I gazed over at him and grabbed his hand. “You need to wake up soon so you can spill the beans. I’m not sure how much longer Sarah is going to be able to keep it in now that she’s got the news confirmed.”

I kissed his knuckles. “More importantly, I need you. I want you. I always have. You’ve always been enough for me. Get better. We won’t be able to be happy without you.”

I lay my head down on his chest. The rise and fall of it lulled me into a slumber.

Chapter 16.

LUCIAN

I was plagued by the strangest of dreams. Katerina would walk over to me and slap me before telling me she was leaving me for a human. That the dragon in me scared her, and then I would change into my dragon and lose all control. I decimated the castle and the town, killing everyone I knew and loved before coming talon to talon with my father.

Then the dream would start over again. And again. And again. Constantly on repeat and showing me the parts of myself I despised the most. I couldn’t escape, I was trapped in Hell.

Until one day, the dream changed. Katerina walked over to me like she always did. She raised her hand and I prepared myself for the slap. Only this time, she stroked my cheek.

“I need you,” she said. “I want you. I always have. You’ve always been enough for me. Get better. We won’t be able to be happy without you.”

I pulled her in for a kiss, deep and passionate. Then the world faded to black, and I drifted off. When I did it this time, it felt more like flying. I was going home. I could feel it.

My eyes opened briefly. I saw Katerina sitting in a chair at my bedside. She slept soundly with her head resting on my chest. I tried to lift a hand to stroke her hair, but I was too weak to move.

Despite my frailness, I felt whole again, and safe.

I’m not sure how much longer I slept for. But when I opened my eyes next, Katerina wasn’t in view. I stretched my arms and legs, and the movement felt refreshing—energizing! My muscles rejoiced, ready to do more than just lie in bed.

I yawned and let out a contented groan.

Katerina’s face appeared out of nowhere. It took me a second to realize she had been in the room the whole time and was actually lying on a mattress on the floor.
