“Look, X is doing this to look for a fight with you. So we have to make sure when we bring him that fight, we’re going to win. He won’t let Catina die, or there’ll be no reason for you to go. He’s going to keep her alive.”

“But what if he doesn’t and we go anyway because we’re hoping?” Her eyes glistened, and she fought that desperation to beg me to let her charge after X, to open the door to the Underworld for her. But for once in my life, I wasn’t the one barging into battle without thinking it through and understanding my enemy.

I got that she didn’t trust X wouldn’t kill her friend. Humans didn’t trust each other, and it showed in their history.

“We’re going down there, with all of us, and we’re going to get Catina out alive. We’ll beat X’s ass, and we’re going to end this once and for all. X wants a fight—we’ll give him something he won’t forget. Therearedownfalls to being immortal, and he’ll find that out.”

Elyse sank down into the armchair, exhausted. “Okay,” she breathed. “Let’s call the troops, then we go after X. I’m not sitting this one out.”

X would never give us the human girl if it meant he’d missed out on fighting Elyse. He wanted her and only her. The rest of us were an irritation more than anything else. But Elyse would have four bodyguards to stop X from doing whatever he planned. Because I wasn’t losing her for the sake of one human life.

It sounded bad, but if I had to choose between Catina and Elyse, between any of the humans, all of the humans, and Elyse, I knew exactly whom I’d go with.
