Nemo laughed as he rushed over to pull me against his chest.

I buried myself in his arms. “I thought I’d lost you.” The blood all over him was of no consequence to me. Him returning alive meant more to me. “I can’t lose you.”

“You’ll never lose me.”

Nemo lifted me up and wrapped my legs around his waist. The passionate kiss he gave me had my head spinning.

“I’m going to marry you,” he added.

This time, I didn’t laugh at his statement. I wanted some sort of future with him. With all of them. Even if I had to give up my title and all that came with it.

“My turn now,” Gill said.

His statement earned him a challenging glare from Nemo.

Reluctantly, the hulking merman set me down, allowing Gill to sweep me up and lay a gruff kiss on me. I wasn’t going to say no. Something about him screamed power, and the deep, dark part of me wanted him to command me. Turn my already-weak legs to jelly.

“Come on, Captain,” said Nemo, lifting Fin to his feet. “Let’s get you to the stream.”

Nemo lifted his leader onto the horse. Fin sucked in a breath, possibly from the agony of his burns.

I was a little disappointed that I hadn’t won a kiss from Fin, too. But there would be time for that. I’d rather him save his energy and put it into healing himself. And I didn’t want to hurt him if he was burned.

Nemo disappeared into the smoke, returning with the two horses.

I blinked, astonished that Faraall hadn’t cut them loose and chased them into the forest.

“Thank Poseidon,” I said to myself.

Gill carried me to the second horse and lifted me onto it. Then he jumped up behind me, holding me tight with one arm as we crossed through the veil of smoke into the forest.

Nemo took the remaining horse, and he and Fin trotted beside us.

I hoped like hell we didn’t encounter Faraall and his men again. We were in no state to be fending them off. If there was another battle anytime soon, I didn’t think we’d be victorious.
