Fin and Nemo stomped over to stand beside us.

The man ran his gaze across Nemo, and the sight of my huge merman was enough to prompt the man to take his seat again.

The breath I held rushed out.

A gentle tug from me got Gill walking again.

“Don’t do that again,” I whispered, blowing a kiss at some feral fool staring at me.

“That’s the way, sexy,” Gill said, licking my lips, making a show of our writhing tongues and the fact that I was all his.

His hands found my butt again, and the folds between my legs glossed with excitement. I rested a hand on his shoulder, enjoying playing my part as I stroked his face.

This time, Fin took the rear the way the palace guards did at functions.

Nemo, on the other hand, was apparently very bothered by what Gill was doing to me and had decided not to cooperate.

I wriggled free of Gill and threw myself at Nemo.

“I don’t like this,” he growled, squeezing me tight to show I was his.

“I’m playing my part in our effort to find the pearl; that’s all.” I ran my hands across his giant chest, but it did little to soothe the jealous beast inside him.

“It’s more than that.” He refused to look at me.

The sadness in his eyes had me choking up, but I had to hold it together. For our mission. To find the pearl and save my father. All I could do was pull his head down to mine and kiss him, hard, quick, like I meant it, showing him I was his, as well. When I pulled away, his expression had lightened a little.

“I’d like it if you did that again.” A hint of a smile tugged at the corner of his lips. “And if you stayed with me.”

Gill swept me back into his arms, taking away my choice in the matter.

“Enough of that, Sugarfins,” he said.

My heart almost snapped in two at the look Nemo gave me as Gill pulled me along.

“Blade’s at the farthest table in the corner,” Gill said.

I shoved aside the haunting image of Nemo’s face, trying to concentrate on my role.

The gloom in the tavern cast harsh shadows along the scar on Blade’s face.Poseidon. Trust him to be at the table farthest from the door…from escape if things turned deadly.

Upon our arrival at his table, he didn’t even glance up from the hand of cards he played. He tossed in some round pieces of wood with numbers on them.

“I raise you fifty,” he said.

“You really want this boat, don’t you?” chuckled the man opposite him, revealing gold fillings on several of his front teeth. He was a fat, leathery, old fellow dressed in long, cotton sleeves—typical pirate’s regalia. He tossed in the same quantity of wooden chips.

“Give me a moment, friend,” the assassin said to Gill, not looking up from his hands. “I’m about to win myself a new ride.”

Gill nodded.

I glanced at Fin. He gave me a wink and returned to scanning the tavern like the pretend thug he was.

Nemo swallowed hard and rubbed a fist in his palm.

The assassin laid down his fan of cards on the stained table.

“Fucking asshole.” The other man slammed his palm on the table then yanked at his necklace, tearing it off and smashing it on the table beside his cards. His chair scraped along the wooden floor as he stood. Angry stomps accompanied his retreat from the premises.
