The distance between us made me ache for him.

“I’ve fallen for you both,” I said, choking back tears.

“This wasn’t how I planned it.” He stood up and paced the floor.

“Nemo, please, sit with me.”

He raised his palms in the air. “I’m sorry. I can’t.” With that, he left me alone. Against his captain’s orders. Against his honor. Against my better judgment.

He might as well have stabbed me in the chest with his trident.

Curse me and my honesty. It was my best and worst quality. The reason I always put my fin in it. Why the nobles despised me. Now, I added Nemo to the list, too, and it crushed me.

I crawled into the water, hoping its loving embrace might comfort me, but it did nothing to ease the ache in my chest threatening to tear me apart. There I lay, staring at the sand, wanting to curl up and die like a sea slug that had abandoned its shell.
