“Sea god,” Taura said, scowling. “Spoiled brat.”

Aunt Ariel swept over to my sister. “Aquina, dear. Decency and civility are the virtues of a great queen.”

The servant’s gaze flew between both princesses.

This was a tactic my aunt used to calm a situation and take the heat off the servants. Then Aquina would be angrier at Ariel. My aunt always fought on the servant’s behalf when it came to the outlandish behavior of some of the nobles and royals.

Aunt Ariel dismissed the servant with a nod and a pat on the elbow. The poor girl scurried away. Aquina glared after the servant as if promising retribution.

“How dare you talk down to me in front of the servants?” Rage inflamed my sister’s words.

My aunt leveled the stare from her niece. “I wouldn’t have to if you weren’t such a merbitch.”

My sister recoiled as if she’d been slapped in the face. Previously, my aunt had resorted to such a maneuver when she needed to put my sister in her place. Sea god it was heaven to watch!

I squeezed Taura’s arm, waiting for Aquina to explode. Not because I was scared of her, but because I had no doubt she would inflict pain on the servants afterward. I was surprised Father had not tried to set her up with Faraall. They’d be the perfect nasty couple together.

Aquina’s lips peeled back, revealing her snarl. “Just wait until I’m queen.”

Aunt Ariel smirked. “I will put you in your place then, as I did now, and find amusement in your childish, little tantrums.”

A few of the nobles snickered.

“Get out of my way.” Aquina shoved past my aunt.

Taura and I giggled as the precious heir of the merrealm stalked through the crowd.

Before I got the chance to congratulate my aunt for teaching my sister a lesson in humility, my father’s voice boomed in my mind. “Nyssa. Please join me.”

Sea god. The big announcement was about to be declared.
