Without a second thought, I grab my phone, dial the number listed in the text, and wait. The phone rings a few times before someone answers.

“Hello?”

“It seems I have something you’re looking for.”

“Who the fuck is this?”

“If you want money, I have plenty of it. We can make a deal.”

“Oh, so the little slut found someone dumb enough to put up with her shit.”

I remain silent, trying to keep my temper in check. The police have probably informed him about finding the stolen car, giving him a general idea about where Savannah is. The last thing I want to do is give him any information that will lead him directly to her. I need to protect her any way I can. And right now, making this deal is my best option.

“I’m sure we can come to an agreement. I had planned on selling her to the highest bidder, but by the tone of your voice, I can tell she’s used goods. I always wondered if that pussy was going to be good.”

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I growl, my eyes flicking toward the door to ensure she is still safely out of earshot. “You’re her stepfather, for Christ’s sake!”

“Who gives a shit? Pussy is pussy.” His dark laughter filters through the phone. “Fifty grand. Take it or leave it. I’m a patient man, and the law is on my side. She can only run for so long.”

Fuck, that’s a lot of money. I rarely have that kind of cash free to play with, but since I closed that deal earlier, the company should’ve wired my retainer fee to my account this morning. That money was supposed to help me live comfortably for the rest of my life, but it means nothing to me now other than a means to an end. The only problem: I can’t just write him a check for that kind of money. Not only would it lead him right to Savannah, but it could open a whole different can of worms if he tells his mob contacts where he got the money from.

“I don’t have the kind of money lying around, but I can get it for you.” I clench my jaw, trying desperately to hang on to some semblance of control.

“Lucky for you, I’m already in town. Meet me at the coffee shop in the center of town. We can go to the bank together and make a withdrawal,” he growls into the phone before ending the call.

“Damn it,” I groan before pushing off the bed and heading into my closet.

I grab the first shirt I find and tug it over my head before pulling on my boots and heading out the door. I know I should tell Savannah what I’m doing, but she’ll only try to stop me. I need to do this so we don’t have to be looking over our shoulders for the rest of our lives.

The only thing that matters right now is ensuring Savannah is safe, even if it costs me everything.

CHAPTERELEVEN

SAVANNAH

“Are you sure I can’t convince you to ravage my body instead of talking about my stepfather?” I shout as I wrap a fluffy white towel around my body, wanting to make sure Brooks can hear me through the bathroom door.

I know Brooks requested clothes, but I really don’t want to talk about Hunter. I want to walk into our room and let Brooks make me forget everything that has happened.

Our room?Where did that thought come from? More importantly, when did I start thinking of this place as my home? Probably around the time I fell in love with Brooks. Everything has been insane. A fairy tale come true. The only thing that would make it better is if I’m pregnant with Brooks’s child.

My hand rests on my stomach as I pull open the door. Brooks has been talking nonstop about me being pregnant like it’s something he needs. I never thought about having children before meeting him, but that thought doesn’t scare me as much as it should. Sure, I wanted to go to college, get a job, buy a house, and all those things the world tells you should make you feel fulfilled. But now staying here in this tiny cabin in the middle of nowhere sounds like heaven.

“Ready or not, here I come.”

I step through the door and raise my hand above my head, attempting to look sexy, but instead of seeing Brooks sitting on the bed waiting for me, I find the room completely empty.

Maybe he’s downstairs. I grip the top of my towel and make my way down the stairs. When I get to the bottom, I am met with silence. I quickly scan the living room before entering the kitchen.

“I thought he wanted to talk…” My voice trails off as I turn and head back up the stairs and take a seat on the bed. “Where the hell could he be?”

Instead of sitting here and feeling sorry for myself, I head back into the bathroom to get dressed. No sense sitting around here waiting for him to come back, especially if he left without saying a word or even leaving a note.

While getting dressed, I replay everything that happened last night in my mind as I enter the bathroom. Last night was one of the best nights of my life. Brooks told me he loved me, that he has every intention of spending the rest of his life with me. There is no doubt in my mind that he meant every word he said. I just wish we could run off into the sunset and forget all the shit with my stepfather.

I know I’m being childish, but the inheritance doesn’t really matter to me anymore. I just don’t want Hunter to have it. I know. Shocker, right? Who knew falling in love could change all your priorities so quickly? My mom kept that money away from Hunter for a reason, so there is no way I’m going to let him get his hands on it.

“I guess I can call and check in with Lisa. She’s probably freaking out,” I mumble before padding back into the bedroom and grabbing my bag.
