“Is she alive?” Blaire cries.

Vera walks up to her, her fingers going to her neck. Then she frowns, leaning down, her ear going to Hazel’s mouth.

Glancing up at me, she looks worried. “She is breathing, but barely. We need to get her back to her house. Her mom will know what to do.”

“How?” I gesture around, seeing multiple pieces of wood in her skin.

“We have to move her. She’ll die if she stays here,” Malik barks.

I growl, blocking her from everyone. “She could die if we move her. The moment we pull the wood out of her, she could bleed out in seconds.”

“She can’t stay here, Felix!” Piper cries.

I bite my lips until they’re raw, staring at everyone.

I know.

I know.

My eyes lift to the sky, for the first time noticing it’s not red anymore, but the typical blueish-gray it usually is. The clouds have slowed, the moon its normal white, just shy of being a full moon.

Did we do it? Is it over?

“We did it, didn’t we?” Atticus asks the question for me.

“We did,” Vera says simply. “The air, it feels different, doesn’t it?”

I take a deep breath, noticing only the usual Castle Pointe heaviness in my lungs, not the toxic, stifling, impossible air we’ve been breathing for days.

“I think it’s over,” I mumble.

“Thank fuck,” Levi groans. “Let’s get out of here. I swear, I’m never coming to this burnt-down piece of shit ever again.”

My eyes glance to Hazel. I feel the same as Levi, but I can’t leave Hazel here, not even for a second longer.

I bring my hand do her leg, the other going to the piece of wood.

“What’re you doing?” Vera shouts at me.

I whip my gaze to hers. “I’m saving my girl.” The words come out on their own, and I don’t correct myself, because I’m not going to fight it anymore.

Hazel is mine, and whether she has a beating heart or not, she’ll still be fucking mine.

I clench my jaw, my eyes on Hazel’s face.

One, two, three.

I lift her leg off the wood, blood instantly filling the gaping wound in her leg. I set her leg down, ripping my shirt over my head and tearing a thick strip of fabric.

“Lift her leg,” I bark, pulling the fabric tight when Levi lifts it for me. I wrap it just above the wound, cutting off the blood flow so she doesn’t lose too much.

My hand goes to her broken fingers, each one bent awkwardly. I intake a breath of air, holding it tightly in my chest as I lift, pulling her hand out of the wood in one quick movement.

I rip off another piece of my shirt, lifting her hand and wrapping her palm tightly, being sure to not put any pressure on her fingers.

“I’ll go pull the car on the grass,” Malik says quickly, darting off into the distance.

My heart hammers against my chest as I bend down, my hand going behind her neck, the other under her knees. I hold my breath as I lift her, wishing she would let out a scream, yell at me, swear at me, fucking anything besides being silent.
