"It's Sister Marjorie."

My eyes widen, and anger hits me. "Sister Marjorie was the one that put me in The Room of Atonement."

Blaire shakes her head. "She's dead, Ver. They found her dead."

I take a step back, and Levi drops his hand. "Wh-what?"

"They found her dead in the hallway. Her neck was snapped in half."

"What? How?" I think back, but the only thing that comes to mind, I don't even want to think about.

Did Malik do something to her?

It's like they can all read my thoughts.

"Was Malik with you earlier? When Sister Marjorie put you in The Room of Atonement?" Levi asks.

I take a shaky breath, not wanting to give him up, but if it'll help me find him, I have to tell them everything.

I nod. "He was. But only before I was put in The Room of Atonement, I don't know what happened after that. But Sister Marjorie was fine, and Malik was freaking out, so I doubt he would've done anything! I don't think it was him!" My heart starts racing, and panic fills my bones. I want to protect the man who hurts me, who verbally lashes out at me at every turn.

But I also want to protect him, because whatever good lingers between us, I don't want to lose that. Not for a second.

"Just admit it, Vera. We all know it had to have been him," Blaire says.

I shake my head. "I won't. I won't admit it, because I don't know a fucking thing. I have to go look for him. Can someoneā€¦ can someone bring me home?"

They all stare at me, leeriness in their gazes.

Hazel nods. "I'll bring you home."

"Fucking text me if you find him. We need to figure this out. Now." Levi shakes his phone at me, and then the three of them stomp off through the dark hallway, and out into the night.

The four of us follow after them, and I look into the sky as we walk down the steps. "How did you know to find me? How are you even here at night?"

Piper glances at me. "We looked everywhere. We even checked your house. Your mom is freaking out, by the way. She got a call from the school."

I roll my eyes. Now she's worried about me?

"We searched all over town. The only other place to look was at school, and there you were."

I sigh, feeling like so much time has passed. How only a handful of hours have gone by seems impossible, yet I know it's the truth.

It's weird, but it's not something I can think about right now.

Right now, my focus has to be on finding Malik.

He needed my help, and I'll do anything I can to give it to him.

"Text me in a bit," Hazel says from the driver's seat.

I nod, giving the girls a wave and shutting the door.

The mansion sits in front of me, tall walls that expand to the clouds. It looks ominous, the gray brick with dark vines crawling up the sides. The lights are on, which is unusual. Samuel and my mom's car sit outside.

I don't know if they came home because they got a call from school, or what. But something's up.

With a sigh, I step forward, walking up the steps to the front door. Before I can even put my hand on the knob, the door swings open, and my mom's tear-stained face greets me.
