“I want to be inside you when you come.”

She was close. He kept her right on the edge. He wanted to give her the release she needed, but for their first time back together, he wanted to be a part of her when he did.

“I... I have an IUD. I haven’t been with anyone else.” She pushed her hips hard against his hand. “Chase, please... I need you.”

Those words unlocked him. He hovered over her body, the head of his dick pressed against her entrance. “I haven’t been with anyone since you.” He thrust into her, burying himself deep. He stared down into her wide, surprised eyes. “It’s only you, sweetheart.” And then he proved it to her, taking her mouth in a deep kiss as he pulled out, then thrust back into her, making love to her like he’d wanted to do since the moment he left her the first time.

“I should have never left you,” he said against her lips. He’d have been happy to live in that moment forever in that crappy motel room in the lumpy bed they shared that night.

She cupped his face and stared into his eyes. “Don’t ever leave me again.”

He touched his forehead to hers and thrust deep. “I won’t,” he promised, meaning it with everything inside him. Then he lost himself in her steady gaze as their bodies moved against each other’s until the pleasure of it overtook them.

Watching her . . . it amazed him to see the passion consume her, knowing he was the one who made her feel that good.

He hoped she finally saw that she did the same to him. Because there was no doubt he’d keep that promise to her.

He’d die if he ever lost her.

Chapter Nineteen

Chase poured his first cup of coffee, leaned back against the counter, and took a sip, his mind on last night and Shelby. He couldn’t stop thinking about her. In his mind, he saw her smile at him, and the lingering unease from the nightmare he woke up to this morning disappeared.

He’d spent the night mostly making love to Shelby. After the first time, he held her close, his body recharging before he started the dance all over again. After nearly three years, he couldn’t help himself. He couldn’t get enough of her. But for all his need driving him to show her how much he missed her, how good they were together, she was the one to take the lead that time. In bed with him, all her shyness evaporated. He loved how she pushed him to his back, straddled his hips, and sank on top of him in a slow glide of pure pleasure. She took her time, riding him to her own rhythm, drawing every stroke and push and pull of her body over his like she wanted it to last all night. Like she never wanted it to end.

He’d have been happy to live in that moment with her forever.

He couldn’t help but take advantage of her position. He ran his hands over her body, fondling those oh sotempting breasts, suckling one and then the other and teasing her tight nipples with his tongue. She’d rode him harder and faster until they were both panting and desperate for each other. He’d taken her hips in his grasp and raised his own, so he was buried deep inside her. He’d rocked her hard against him. She’d gone off like a rocket, and his ass hit the bed on an explosive climax.

Sex had always been good, but never mind-blowing amazing like it was with her.

When he and Shelby were together, it wasn’t just sparks flying. It was a connection he’d never felt and didn’t want to lose.

She righted his tilted world.

And for a little while, in her arms, he found peace again.

Until he woke up this morning. But today the nightmare faded quickly from his mind and didn’t haunt him with the same anxiety that wound him tight most days.

Instead, he had a sense that last night had been a real start to the relationship and life he wanted to build with Shelby.

“Why are you up so early?” Shelby walked into the kitchen, her hair a haphazard mass of tangles and waves, her eyes barely open, wearing his T-shirt and he hoped nothing else.

“I thought you’d sleep longer.” He hooked his arm around her shoulders and pulled her in to his bare chest.

She pressed her cheek over his heart and snuggled up close to him, wrapping her arms around his back. “Nightmare?” she asked, because he’d avoided her question.

He’d tried not to disturb her after he’d shot up in bed trying to escape the unescapable. She’d reached for himimmediately, but he’d soothed her to sleep by rubbing her back and whispering sweet words to her.

“I’m fine.” Not the answer she was looking for, but this morning it was true. Because of her.

She leaned back and stared up at him. “Did you sleep at all?”

“Some. But that’s mostly because you were much more tempting than sleep.” He brushed his fingers through the side of her hair and held her head. “Morning, sweetheart.”

She studied him for a moment, then smiled instead of voicing any more of her concerns. “Morning.” She snagged the mug from his hand and took a sip.

He set the mug on the counter beside him, then cupped her face and stared down at her. “You look adorably rumpled and incredibly sexy in my shirt.”
