And then days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and months turned into years. Life went on and I felt strange bringing it up.

“Yeah, I did.”

“I missed you, too.”

I wasn’t sure if it was the darkened room or the reminiscing or the relief of knowing for sure that my father had nothing to do with Cheyenne’s conception, but whatever it was I felt myself leaning toward Cheyenne. And if I wasn’t mistaken, she was leaning as well.

There was so much electricity surging between us that I was hyper-aware. Everything was heightened. I heard the squeak of the mattress springs under the weight of our bodies. I felt the warmth of Cheyenne’s breath against my face as we neared each other. I heard the quick intake of her breath right before our lips touched and my phone vibrated loudly.

She jerked back at the sound. When I pulled out my phone I expected to see a Comfort calling me, but not the youngest one. Jimmy never called me. Shit. Billy must be really upset.

I wanted to tell Cheyenne about my conversation with him before answering the phone but I figured I better find out what the damage was.

“Who is it?” Cheyenne’s voice was shaky and I wondered if it was because she’d been scared by the ring or if it was the aftereffects of the kiss we’d almost shared.

“Jimmy.”

“Why is Jimmy calling you?” she asked as I lifted it to my ear.

I answered with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. “Hello.”

“Hey, is my baby sister with you?”

“Yeah.” I stared at Cheyenne sitting cross-legged in front of me. She used to always sit like that to eat when we were kids. I’d noticed over the past year that she still did when really tired. She called it crisscross applesauce. It was adorable, just like everything else about her.

“Can I talk to her?”

I felt bad handing her the phone without warning her that Billy had called me and what she might be facing. “Everything okay?” I tried to get a sense of where things stood. Jimmy didn’t sound upset, if anything it was the opposite. He sounded happy.

“Better than okay!” He exclaimed and I heard Isabella giggling in the background.

I wasn’t sure what this call was about but it sure as hell didn’t seem like it had anything to do with Billy being pissed.

I handed her the phone and her nose scrunched in confusion.

“Hi.”

I watched as she listened intently.

“Uh-huh.”

She began nodding.

“Yeah.”

Then her mouth dropped, and her eyes widened. “Are you serious?!”

She looked at me as if she expected me to share in her excitement over the information that she’d just heard, but I had no idea what that was.

“Yes!” She exclaimed. “No, it’s no problem! I will! Yes, I’m not going to miss that!”

“Okay.” She was nodding again. “Okay, see you both soon! Love you!”

She hung up the phone and her mouth once again dropped open.

“What is it?”

“Jimmy and Isabella are getting married on Friday.”
