It was heartbreaking to see the raw pain in Wayne’s eyes. Even after all these years, it was obvious how much he’d cared about Cheyenne’s mom. Hell, he’d named his daughter after her.

We started to walk away but Cheyenne paused on the top step and turned back. I was expecting her to say something but instead she reached out and wrapped her arms around Wayne’s neck.

He closed his eyes and hugged her back.

“Thank you,” I heard her say on an exhale before she released him, and we continued to the truck.

We got in and drove in silence. The radio was playing softly as I pulled onto the highway. I wanted so badly to ask her if she was okay, but I think I knew the answer.

She wasn’t but she would be. She was stronger than she knew. I couldn’t imagine how disappointing this all must be for her.

My hope was that my mom would have answers. Even if the answers were to questions that I wasn’t quite sure how to ask her.
