“She was, I mean she is. It’s not just that. Her grandmother was in the hospital and she had to fly up to see her.”

“Is she okay?”

“Cheyenne or her grandmother?”

“Both.”

“Her grandmother is home now and so is Cheyenne.”

“Okay, so have you talked to her, about Amelia?”

“Yeah.”

“And?” My mother waved her hands indicating she wanted more information.

“And what?”

“Are you purposefully trying to be vague and frustrating?”

“Yes. Is it working?” I grinned. I wasn’t actually, but I didn’t have a lot to say on the subject. Cheyenne knew that I had a daughter and she seemed happy for me but also more distant.

“Cashel Edward Malone.” My mom used all three names as she threw the teething ring at me. I lifted my left hand and caught it before it tagged me in the cheek.

“What?” I chuckled. “What do you want to know?”

My mom was not one to suffer fools. And who knew, maybe she’d have some insight into the situation since I sure as hell didn’t know what to do.

“Do you love Cheyenne?”

“Yes,” I answered automatically.

“And what are you doing about it?”

My brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, does she know that you love her?”

“I think so.” I wasn’t sure how she couldn’t.

“Have you told her that you love her? That you’re in love with her?”

“There’s been a lot of changes lately, and I think that she just needs some time. Some space.” And I was scared shitless that when we finally did talk, she’d tell me what I was dreading. That she thought it would be better if we were just friends. That our lives were just in two different places.

“I promise you time and space is the last thing that girl needs. What she needs is to know that the man she loves, loves her back. What she needs is for you to tell her that even though you have changes going on in your life, she is still a priority and you will do whatever it takes to make things work with her.”

“You got all that from me telling you that I love her?”

“Of course, I did. Now what are you waiting for, go.”

“Mom, it’s late.”

“Trust me, it’s never too late for the man you love to show up on your doorstep and tell you that he loves you.” My mom shooed me away. “Now go. Go talk to her!”

I stood from the table, pulled my mom into a bear hug and kissed her on the top of her head. “When did you become so wise?”

“When I became a grandma,” she hugged me back. “Duh.”
