“I know we always said that we were brothers, but the truth is, we’re not. You have brothers. Jimmy and Hank. And you don’t think I’m good enough for Cheyenne. That’s the truth.”

“No one is good enough for Cheyenne.”

“You’re right. But I love her. And I don’t know how she feels about me, but if there’s a chance that we can be together, I’m gonna take it.”

It felt so good to finally get that off my chest. I felt lighter and free. I’d hated hiding what I felt about Cheyenne from Billy.

Before he had a chance to respond there was a knock on the door. They were here. I was going to meet my daughter. This was a moment I would normally love to have Billy by my side, but with the way things were between us I just wanted him to get the fuck out of my house.

I stared at him, his nose was flaring like a bull ready to charge just like it had been at the wedding. I’d never imagined that I wouldn’t want to have my best friend at my side when I met my daughter, but right now he was the last person I wanted here.

He must have read my mind because he snapped, “I’ll go out the back.”

Relief washed over me, but it was mixed with a little disappointment. The fact that he couldn’t put aside whatever macho bullshit he had about his sister and realize that this was a big moment for me. It stung a little. Or maybe a lot.

But that was something I could save for therapy. Right now, I needed to be in the moment.

I opened the door and this time when I looked down, I saw a little girl with my eyes and my mom’s smile looking back up at me from her stroller.

“Cash, this is Amelia.” Marissa introduced us as she unhooked the strap and lifted her daughter out of the stroller. “Amelia, this is Cash”

“Da da da da.” She waved her arms.

My eyes shot to Marissa. She knew that I was her dad?!

“Don’t get too excited. Everything is dada.” Marissa explained with a slight chuckle. “It doesn’t matter what I do. Watch.” She shifted Amelia in her arms. “Lia can you say Mama, Mama?”

“Dada dada dada.”

“See?” Marissa shrugged with a chuckle. “Do you want to hold her?”

I nodded and opened my arms. She reached for me and as soon as I held her my heart burst wide open. I knew, in that moment, that it didn’t matter what was going on in my life, the most important thing in the world was this baby girl. I’d do anything for her. Anything.
