CHAPTER 35

Cheyenne

My phone buzzed and I saw that it was a text from Cash asking if I was awake and I shot him back a quick message telling him I was.

It had been twenty-four hours since I’d seen Cash. I’d come home yesterday morning after we shipped off the DNA packets to clear my head and wait for the paternity tests to come in. For both of the tests to come in.

Thankfully, because we were sending them to Isabella’s company, we were able to get the results fast-tracked. They said they could be back in twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Which meant that they could be coming in anytime now.

I rinsed out my bowl of oatmeal and my mind flashed back to the morning that Cash had made me breakfast after Billy and Reagan’s wedding. That morning, I was sure that I’d blown any chance with him. I was certain that my drunken behavior had sealed my fate. But I was wrong.

He hadn’t held that against me. Or at least he hadn’t held it against me for that long.

Maybe it was because I’d told him that I was a virgin and it had freaked him out. Maybe the only reason that we ended up sleeping together was because we’d got caught in a storm.

And now there was a chance he’d be able to have what he always dreamed of, a family, with someone who didn’t have an overprotective brother who was Cash’s best friend.

I’d known that our relationship was complicated for Cash before we went to visit his mom, but she’d given me an entirely new insight into just how complicated it actually was.

Billy had been there for Cash’s parents when his dad was sick and Cash was deployed. Colleen said that she didn’t know how she would have gotten through those times without Billy. And she also mentioned that Cash had had a tough time once he got home. That he’d suffered with some depression and anxiety and Billy had made sure that he got the help he needed.

Cash always said that Billy was the brother he’d never had but I guess I’d never really thought about what that meant. Or how a relationship with me might jeopardize that brotherhood.

Maybe it was selfish and unfair of me to want what I wanted from Cash. Maybe the best thing to do was let him have the family he always wanted and keep his friendship with Billy intact.

There was a knock on the door and my heart sped as I went to answer it. I hoped that it would be Cash standing on the other side of it. That he would pull me into his arms and tell me that he loved me and that nothing or no one would ever change that.

When I opened the door, I did see Cash standing on my porch, but he didn’t declare his undying love for me. Instead, he held up his phone.

“I got the results. Did you?”

“I don’t know.” I opened the door wider before heading back to the kitchen table to grab my phone and check my email. “What did yours say?”

“I haven’t opened the email yet. I wanted to do it with you.”

I tried not to read too much into why he’d chosen to come over before he’d checked the results. We were friends. And we’d grown closer over the past couple of weeks. Also, we were both finding out some pretty important news.

I was finding out if I had found my biological father and he was finding out if he was one.

The email from the lab was at the top of my inbox. “Yeah, I got my results, too.”

We stared at each other for a moment. I felt like there was a lot to say, but for the life of me, I couldn’t think of a single thing.

“You go first.” He motioned to my phone.

It was strange, before Marissa had shown up at Cash’s house, I didn’t think anything was more important than finding out if Oscar was my father. But now, I had to admit, I was much more curious to find out if Cash was a father.

I opened the email and read the results.

There was a 97.896% chance that Oscar was my father.

“He is.” I turned my phone so that Cash could see for himself.

He smiled and pulled me into a warm hug. “I’m so happy for you.”

I was happy, too. Or at least that’s what I was telling myself that I was. In reality, I wasn’t sure what I felt aside from nervousness.

“Okay, your turn.” I pulled out of his arms and he took a deep breath.
