Page 18 of Always Her Mate

Snatching it out of her grip would be rude, even for an alpha shifter, so I settle on calling her name.

“Hailey?”

It’s like she can’t hear me.

“Hailey!”

Still no answer.

What the—

It takes me another three times calling her name before she finally rips her gaze from Dominic.

“Yeah, Gem? What’s up?”

“What have you got there?”

“Huh? Oh. You mean this?” She flashes the envelope at me but, for some reason, doesn’t hand it over. “Jimmy gave it to me last week. He said a young girl with black hair gave him this envelope outside the bar, making him promise he’d give it to you. But you were off that night, so he gave it to me. I took it home, forgot about it, then only remembered to grab it earlier since I knew you were in today.”

Okay. Not the sort of answer I was expecting, but now I’m even more curious.

I’m just about to ask for it when Dominic snares Hailey’s attention again.

At least, this time, it’s to say goodbye.

The smooth vampire reaches over the bar, holding out his alabaster hand to Hailey. She quickly switches the envelope from her right hand to her left so that she can take him. From my spot a few steps away from her, I can see Dominic as he runs his long, slender fingers over her pulse point.

He smiles, the points of his fangs peeking out over the edge of his bottom lip. “I’ll be seeing you soon.”

Hailey giggles while Tamera rolls her eyes.

Honestly, I’m kinda on her side with this one.

It takes a few more seconds before he finally lets go of my co-worker. With a stern look in my direction—okay, maybe I rolled my eyes a little, too—he wordlessly tells me that the Cadre has their eyes on me, then strolls out of Charlie’s with Tamera at his side.

I don’t think Hailey freaking blinks until the door opens, then closes behind the pair of vampires.

Just in case, I snap my fingers.

She jerks, like she’s been ripped out of a trance.

Then again, considering I don’t know the extent of a vampire’s power or how they snare their human prey, for all I know, shecould’vebeen.

My brow furrows as both me and my wolf check her over. “Hailey. You okay?”

“More than okay,” she breathes out. Not so sure about that. Her eyes are kinda dazed-looking, but she blinks again and starts to act a little more coherent. A little more like her normal self, too, especially since she seems starstruck after meeting the male vamp.

She just goes to prove I’m right by asking, “Whowasthat?”

“Dominic Le Croix. Cadre,” I remind her. She must’ve missed the earlier introduction because she was too busy drooling. Whatever. I’m not too concerned since I’m pretty sure they’re going to get to know each other better after what I just witnessed anyway. “Now, about that envelope—”

“Do you think he’s interested in me?”

A human with an obvious vampire bite? I can’t promise that he’ll fall in love with her and make her his blooded mate, but I’m betting the powerful vamp knows an easy mark when he sees one. At the very least, he’ll sample her blood.

“Yes,” I tell her, my words ringing with honesty. “I do.”
