Damien says, covering himself with his hand from my pillow shots, “Okay, enough! White flag!”

“You’re surrendering?” I laugh.

“I am… not!” He catches me in his embrace, tickling me again and again until we both fall onto the sofa, exhausted.

“Tell me something about yourself, Damien?” I say, staring at the ceiling, trying to catch my breath.

“Something? Be more specific,” he jokes.

I can’t help my curiosity. The court case against Damien has been haunting me ever since my father mentioned it. Like a dark rain cloud looming over me. I let out a heavy breath, contemplating whether I should open this can of worms or let it go. I don’t want to pry. At the same time, I can’t stop thinking about it.

“Just ask what you have to ask, Ava,” Damien says, but the big grin is now replaced with a stern look. He gets up and sits on the opposite side to face me.Way to spoil the mood, Ava. Nice!

“Well…,” I start hesitantly, regretting my nosiness. “My dad–”

“Told you about my legal issues?” He finishes for me. His tone is cold, just like his eyes.

“Yeah. Sorry.” I grimace apologetically, rubbing my elbow. “I don’t mean to invade your privacy, but it’s just… bothering me, I guess.”

“It’s okay. I thought he’d tell you.” Damien says, keeping the poker face on. “It’s nothing, though.”

I ask, scanning his hard-to-read face, “But, is it?”

“Nothing that you should be worried about, anyway.”

“Wow. So vague.” I roll my eyes, not even trying to hide the sarcasm.

“And you’re very attentive, aren’t you?” The smirk is now clearly visible.

“I am,” I say proudly, lifting my chin. “I can tell when someone is lying. So you better not lie to me, Damien.” And this is the truth. I am the kind of person who can smell a lie miles away. Call it female intuition or my special superpower, but that’s how I am. And yet, it seems like Damien is immune to my sorcery because I can never tell if he’s telling the truth or playing with me.Damien Alarie is the only person in the world I cannot figure out.

“So?” I raise my brow. “Will you give me a hint?”

“Let’s say it’s just a family thing.” He replies casually, and I am amazed how this man can cunningly dodge any inconvenient topic. But it seems like he notices the displeasure on my face because he adds, “I had to do something to protect my family. And that has to be enough for you, Firefly. At least for now.”

“But you didn’t kill anyone, did you?” The words leave my mouth faster than my brain realizes how dumb it sounds. Damien raises his eyebrow, gazing at me with a mocking smirk.

“You can sleep peacefully. I didn’t kill anyone, Firefly.” He states, and he sounds somewhat convincing, but there’s something in his eyes that tells me there’s more to the story. That I’m wrong if I think the world is black and white.

I hold my hands up. “Okay. I’ll let it go.”

He teases, “Good. Are we done with the interrogation?”

“I’ve just started,” I chuckle as he sighs exaggeratingly, pretending to be annoyed.

“Okay, then. What else do you want to know, Miss Nosypants?”

“I’m not nosy!” I object. “I just want to get to know you.”

“Yeah, right.” He mocks, and we laugh. “Okay, next question. Shoot.”

“I don’t know where to start. You’ve been so mysterious.” I tease, and he chuckles again. “Do you have any siblings?” And this very second, his smirk vanishes. It seems like I have hit all the wrong topics.

“Not anymore,” he lets out a soft breath. “My older brother died when I was eight.”

“I’m sorry,” I give him an apologetic look.

“It’s okay. I got used to the pain.” He plays this tough bad boy again, but I know, deep down, it’s still hurting him. “Here, see this tattoo?”
