Chapter Twenty-Six

Skylar

I waited until I couldn’t hear the footsteps of the goblin guard. The halls seemed empty and the other prisoners weren’t speaking. A heavy weight sat in my gut. It was too quiet. What had they done to cause so many passive, depressed shifters? The mood of the place was nearly dragging me down. It was so defeated. So hopeless.

But there was hope. I had a weapon and a way out. The mages were working on cracking the magic. And even if they failed, Xander was in here and I had to get him out.

I looked back at my roommate. She looked broken and frail. How long had she been here? There was very little magical signature coming from her, but I could tell she wasn’t a shifter.

“Hey,” I said.

She looked up at me and I gasped, recognizing her eyes at once. While Elias and David didn’t look alike, there was no mistaking that blue color for anyone other than Elias’s sister.

“You’re Clara, aren’t you?” I took a few cautious steps toward her. Had Madison known she was here? Was this part of her plan?

My heart was racing, the heavy dread replaced by hopeful flutters. This was better than I expected. If I could get both of us out of here, I was halfway to the goal.

“Who’s asking?” She said.

I crouched next to her. “Elias and David are both looking for you.”

Her eyes seemed to come alive at my comment, her posture straightened and she was more alert than she had been moments ago. “How do you know them?”

“Well, to simplify a complicated story, they’re my mates,” I said.

She lifted a surprised brow. “Both of them?”

“Lucky me,” I said.

“I’m not sure I’d go with lucky,” she said. “I assume that means you’re here to get me out?”

“Something like that,” I said.

“Marcella has the stone,” she said in a whisper. “We can’t leave without it.”

“I know,” I said. “I’m the one she stole it from.”

“You’re not a full demon, are you?” Clara asked. She was sitting more upright now, the frailty I initially saw was gone. I realized it had all been an act.Smart girl.

“Part demon,” I said.

“The other part?” she asked.

“Wolf shifter,” I said.

She tensed. “I’m a shifter too. Lucky me, I got the gene. My brothers don’t have it. Good news, the stone’s powers don’t last on me. Bad news, they will work for a short time.”

“I’m so sorry,” I said.

“I’m warning you because I worry that’s the category you’ll fall into.” She stood. “Don’t let them use it on you.”

“I’m not planning on it,” I said.

“You have a way out of here for us?” She asked.

“Maybe,” I confessed. “We’ve got things in place but there’s going to be a lot left to the imagination. Can you fight?”

“Yes,” she said.
