“I take it he’s been using that signature move for a while?” I asked.

“We had different teachers and learned different ways to control our magic,” David said.

“I prefer a faster resolution over flashy theatrics,” Elias added.

“To be fair, you’re both pretty flashy,” I said.

“So you’ve been using my place as a hideout, huh?”

My eyes widened and I spun around to see Heidi staring at me. Her arms were folded over her chest and her eyebrows were raised but she had a smile on her lips.

“You’re supposed to be halfway around the world,” I scolded.

She shrugged. “He was cheating on me so I figured I’d come help you save the world.”

I closed the distance between us and pulled her in for an embrace. “I’m so sorry. About the apartment, and the boyfriend.”

She let me go and stepped back from the hug. “Well, I suppose helping your mage friends and your multiple boyfriends save the world from an evil vampire queen will have to do in terms of a distraction from the heartbreak.”

“When you say it like that, it sounds insane,” I said.

“How did you manage to find multiple partners in the time it took me to break up with one?” she asked.

“It’s a long story,” I said.

“It’s actually not that long. I think he caught me up on most of it.” She nodded at David.

“I’m glad you’re safe,” I said. “But I really don’t want you mixed up in this. We can go somewhere else.”

“Where would you go?” She asked. “And no. You’re stuck with me. I need this closure.”

“I already told her she’s in,” David said. “I like her.”

“I sprayed him with a homemade garlic spray when we met,” she said.

I looked at David, surprised he was taking this so well. “Well then, I guess you’re part of our little team.”

“You’ll need me,” she said. “I can get inside the vampire queen’s palace.”

“Wait, what?” I asked. “No. No way. We’re not sending anyone else in there. We go together this time.”

I looked at the mages. “What about those back doors?”

“We can try it, but I’m not confident,” Shelly said. “It helps that there’s more of us, but Marcella isn’t stupid. She’ll have checked for tears.”

“How long does it take to check?” I asked.

“Give us an hour somewhere quiet,” Becca said.

“My bedroom’s that way,” Heidi said.

“It’s a mess, by the way,” I teased.

“You were in my bedroom?” Heidi blinked a few times.

“With her other demon boyfriend,” David added.

“I don’t want to know,” she said.
