“It’s not a bad idea,” David said. “We were willing to send you as our decoy, why not him?”

“You know why,” I said. “He’s not going to be able to resist that stone.”

“What if he could?” Madison said. “Whatever mind magic those mages did to me seemed to work. I kept my head, I didn’t flinch when the queen gave me commands.”

“How do we know?” I asked.

“Because she ordered me to bring Xander in alive. She didn’t care what I did to the rest of you. She only wants him,” Madison explained.

“Well, fuck,” I said.

“We have to try it, right?” Xander said.

“Are you insane?” I asked.

Xander chuckled. “You do realize you’re acting just like us when we said we didn’t want to send you in there.”

I glared at him. He was right, of course. But it was one thing to volunteer myself for a chance at sparing my mates. It was something else entirely to go along with risking Xander’s life. If she’d demanded David or Elias, it wouldn’t be nearly as risky. Though, I probably wouldn’t be fond of that either. I didn’t want anything to happen to any of them. I’d rather take the risk myself.

It shouldn’t matter, the plan was always to have them follow after I was inside, but I hated this. It made me feel like I had no control.

“Wake the mages,” Elias said. “We’ve got a change of plans.”

“It’s going to be fine, Skylar,” Xander said. “Let me do this. It’s my pack on the line here.”

I nodded. At least we had the mages to try to give him an advantage. As much as I hated having Sam around, if their magic could give Xander the protection he’d need, it was worth her sassy comments.

“We hear someone needs some magic?” Becca said from the stairs.

Xander squeezed my hand then walked toward the kitchen. “I’ll be in here when you’re ready.”

The other mages joined Becca on the stairs then all four of them and Shelly walked into the kitchen. Nervous flutters filled my stomach and I worried about what the magic might do to Xander. I worried even more about what would happen when Madison took him to the queen. What if it didn’t work?

“I won’t let her keep him,” Madison said. “And I won’t let her kill him.”

“What if she uses the stone on him successfully?” I asked.

“Then I’ll get him back to you and your mages will fix it,” she said.

I still didn’t like it. “Alright.”

“If he’s going in, what are the rest of us going to do?” David asked. “If Clara is in there, I want her out.”

“She’s in there,” Madison said. “I’ll only be able to blow my cover once. So when I bring Xander in, I can’t break it unless I know we can get the stone and Clara.”

“Did you find out anything about Clara?” David asked. “Is she spelled? Is she safe?”

“I’m not sure,” Madison said. “I didn’t see her.”

“You’re saying you want to play this by ear,” Elias said. “You don’t want a plan.”

“It’s how it has to be,” Madison said.

“If you’re not back in a few hours, we’re going in after you,” I said.

“You have to have a little more faith in me than that,” Madison said.

“Twenty-four,” Elias said.
