She rolled her eyes but walked into the small living room. “You say I don’t need sleep but I feel like I do.”

“Well, let’s start with that.”

“What do you mean?” She moved away from the doorway and I could almost feel the curiosity bubbling inside her. I could tell she was interested. A good sign in someone you were trying to teach.

When we were kids, I’d worked with Clara often to help her with her magic. My father was old fashioned and didn’t think females should be trained to protect themselves or fight. A lump settled in my throat. I wish I’d done more to help Clara learn. Then maybe she’d be at home now. We all would.

The fact that she might be alive was too much. I couldn’t let myself hope after all this time. But maybe I could help Skylar. This wasn’t my original plan, but I knew I couldn’t let anything happen to Skylar.

“We doing this or not?” she asked.

I shook myself from my thoughts. “Yes. I won’t be able to teach you much in one night, but it’ll help some. You have to find your core magic. Once you can identify that, it’s going to help you a ton.”

“Like the place where the fire comes from?” she asked.

I lifted a surprised brow. Maybe this would go better than I anticipated. “You can sense where the fire starts from?”

She nodded. “Is that what I’m looking for?”

“Exactly,” I said. “That’s the place where your magic is stored and where it’s fueled inside you. It’s different for everyone so there’s no set rule. You have to identify it so you can get there quickly and pull from it.”

“How does that help me not sleep?” She looked skeptical.

“Find that place and use it to deliver energy. Sort of like when you call fire. Do you get that feeling like the fire is moving through you? Like it’s heating you from the inside out and traveling through your body before you release it.”

Her lips parted in a moment of surprise before she closed her mouth. I lingered there, my mind instantly taking me back to the stolen kiss. Even in that heartbeat of a moment, I’d felt how soft and full they were. I wanted to feel her lips on mine again. I wanted to slide my tongue into her mouth. I wanted to taste all of her.

“That’s exactly how it feels,” she said.

I forced myself to meet her eyes. They sparkled with what I could only guess was excitement. It had to be interesting for her, learning about magic and learning how to use it now. I couldn’t even remember my early magic lessons. I’d had it my whole life. It was just part of me.

“That’s the same way you can pull energy. You have to feel for the different vibrations or flows that your magic creates. You can capture energy and send it through your body. It’s similar to what sleep does for humans.”

“What if I run out of magic?” she asked.

“Well, that depends on what kind of demon you are. For me, I can re-charge with sex.”

“How would I know?” she asked.

“Do you feel more energized and clear after sex?” I asked. “For me, it’s like sending a jolt of power right to my magic core. I’m buzzing after sex.”

“That’s never happened for me. At least not that I’m aware of,” she said.

“I’m happy to test it out with you,” I suggested.

“Nice try,” she deadpanned.

“Fine, we’ll do things your way,” I said. “You said your mom was the demon, right?”

“I suppose,” she said. “My dad was a wolf shifter. I never met my mom.”

“Do you have anything of hers? There’s a spell we could try,” I said.

She reached for her neck, as if grasping for something that wasn’t there. “I do have something of hers, but it’s not with me.”

“We’ll have to wait on that, then. We do know you can create hellfire. Is there anything else you’ve noticed about yourself?” I asked.

“I can feel emotions,” she said. “Sense how people are feeling. It’s heightened when I’m drinking.”
