“I could have felt for a connection between her and I. But I was worried that if I went to her, my brother would find her and make an example of her. He couldn’t kill me until he had an heir. He would have taken his anger out on her,” he said.

“Don’t do this to yourself,” I said. “You know we can’t change the past.”

“I’m going to be there for you and Malcom. Whatever you need,” he said.

“I appreciate that.” I let go of Alec’s hand and moved closer to Spencer. Our relationship was new, untested, but he was trying. And there was no harm in me trying as well. I wrapped my arms around him, giving him a hug.

Spencer tensed as if he wasn’t sure how to respond. Then he relaxed and threw his arms around me, pulling me closer.

In all my fantasies about how my life would play out, I never once thought I’d know who my dad was, let alone be able to give him a hug. When we released each other, we were both smiling.
