My friends held their ground, but I could feel their eyes on us. They were waiting for an opening. If I wanted Tyler gone by their teeth and claws, I needed to get myself out of the way.
Instead, I closed in on Tyler, facing him myself.
I could hear the warning growls of my friends, but I was acting on pure impulse. The anger and hate were clouding my thoughts, driving me forward. In my weaker human form, it was already risky enough to take on a wolf, but Tyler deserved pain.
I charged him, throwing my shoulder into his side. His wolf stumbled but didn’t fall. He turned on me and swiped his claws across my chest.
Hissing in pain, I moved toward the cliff. I knew I couldn’t kill him myself, but I might be able to draw him to the edge and push.
Tyler raced after me and caught my feet, making me land face first in the dirt. I rolled to my back and kicked him in the face, then used both feet to push into his side, knocking him to the ground.
Scrambling away on all fours, I got myself some space before attempting to stand. When I did, I turned to engage Tyler again, but this time, I was blocked. Kyle’s gray wolf stood in front of me, a warning in his eyes. He growled, low and steady. It wasn’t a threatening sound, but I knew he wasn’t going to let me pass.
Two more wolves moved in around me. Sheila on my right, Malcom on my left. The three of them blocking me in. “Let me go. I have to end this.”
Sheila’s wolf snapped at me, then lifted her head toward Tyler. I looked up and saw him circling Alec’s dark gray wolf. The two males didn’t even seem to notice the rest of us. They were far too engrossed in each other.
Both wolves had teeth bared, their fur was bristled and angry. I swallowed hard. This was exactly what I’d hoped to prevent. I didn’t want Alec to take on Tyler alone. What if Tyler hurt him? What if Tyler killed him?
“You have to help him,” I said.
The other three wolves didn’t move. I took a step forward, and Kyle’s wolf nudged me back. I wasn’t going anywhere, and they weren’t stepping in. Alec was taking on Tyler alone.
