Abigail: Wow, beautiful view. I’d love to work in a space like that. Lunch?

Me: Okay, be here around noon. That work?

Abigail: See ya soon

“Ms. Cade, there’s a woman here needing to speak to someone. The others are out at lunch. Are you free?”

I followed Alyson out to the waiting area to find a woman troubled, her face blotchy. “Can I help you, ma’am?”

The woman stared at me with her eyebrow raised, “You’re a lawyer?”

“Indeed, I’m a partner here. Would you like to join me in my office to talk further?”

The troubled woman trailed after me back to my office and plopped herself down in my guest chair. She was flustered and incoherent. “He... my kids were left alone... he was at a bar.”

I put my hand up, “Listen, let’s start from the beginning. Breathe. Why are you here?”

“I want to talk to someone about my children. Their father... and I are no longer together, so he gets them on the weekends. But he left them alone while he went to a bar...”

This was a family case and right up my alley. “How old are your children, ma’am?”

“Five and Eight.”

“I’d be happy to represent you. First, we’ll need to get proof of his inability to care for the children. Do you have any proof right now besides what you saw?”

Her eyes were wide. “No, but I need you to help me.”

“Okay, maybe we can find something. Please write down your information, and I’ll contact you.” I handed her a pen, pad, and a tissue. “Rest assured; I’ll do everything I can to help you and your kids.”

As the woman left, she twisted back and smiled at me, wiping her cheeks. “Thank you so much. Let me know if there’s anything I can do that would help the case.”

I nodded my head with a smile. She seemed like a caring woman and a good mother, but could you tell by a conversation? No, but I knew from prior experience I had to do my research before jumping in head-on with this case, so it didn’t bite me in the ass.

My phone vibrated against my desk with a text.

Abigail: I’m in the parking lot. Are you ready?

“Hey girl,” I heard a woman squeal.

Wow, she really filled out from looking like a little boy in high school. “How are you, Abs?” I asked, enclosing her in a huge hug. It’d been way too long since we’ve seen each other. We always pick up right where we left off, and there was never a need to warm up to each other again.

“I’m doing great. Boytoy and I are still going strong. Let’s not talk about me; you’re a freaking partner. We need to celebrate!”

We planned on leaving the firm to eat, but never got around to it. Three hours passed, and we were still sitting in my office.

“Okay, I gotta go. It’s already three o’clock.” Abigail said, looking at her watch.

“Time flies when you’re enjoying yourself. You should know better than anyone.” I replied with a smile.

“See you later, Cam.”

Before now, I’d been so busy with work that I never realized how much I missed Abigail. The conclusion to move back was smart not only for my profession but also for our friendship.

“Alyson. Could you come here, please?” I said, paging her on my phone.

“Yes, ma’am. What can I do for you?” She popped in with a smile.

“Any way you could run to the cafe and get me a sandwich and coffee? I didn’t realize how long Abigail was in my office.”
