Maira headed up to her chamber to be alone and think. She had some very important decisions to make, and this wasn’t going to be easy.

Jacob stoodoutside the castle gates with Will, hidden in the shadows. He’d followed the girl to make certain she returned safely to the castle. Actually, he also followed her to try to find out if she was going to reveal to the High Sheriff all Jacob’s plans.

“Did you see that?” whispered Will as they watched Maira bravely take on the High Sheriff.

“Aye,” said Jacob softly. “She put her own safety at risk to help those servants.”

“Not unlike what you’re doing with the villagers,” said Will.

“Perhaps,” he answered in deep thought. “However, I don’t know what she is going to do. We’ll have to keep a close eye on her. She is very unpredictable.”

“Do you think she’ll come back to the forest and join you, my lord?”

“I don’t know. But if she doesn’t, I am going to have to convince her somehow, no matter what it takes.”
